Ten Things that Nokia Did Right in making the 5800 XpressMusic

icon

Having spent an entire feature slamming Touch in general and perhaps the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in particular, I think it's only fair to give Nokia some credit and balance the equation with a breakdown of Ten Things that Nokia Did Right in the 5800, things which they didn't have to do but which impressed me nevertheless. Are these ten plus points enough to make the 5800 XpressMusic a must-buy? Maybe, maybe not, but their very existence speaks well of Nokia, of the 5800 and of sister devices to follow.

N-Gage won't merge with Ovi Store, at least for now

icon

The upcoming Ovi Store application is due to replace Nokia's existing Download!, MOSH and Software Market services, and there has been speculation about what else it might absorb. However, Nokia has now gone on record to say the N-Gage application will be kept as a separate service, at least for the moment, though they also said that their medium term goal is to "converge everything into a single distribution channel".

Camera Nitty Gritty Postscript: The Camera NeverAlways Lies

icon

One great camera phone produces an image that's full of detail. Another great camera phone produces an image with similar detail but totally different colouring - but which is 'right'? In this postscript to my Camera Nitty Gritty series of features, I explain that 'right' is somewhat subjective and that what you see from a digital camera is always heavily influenced by what the manufacturer thinks you'll prefer to see.

DRM free Comes with Music on Nokia's roadmap

icon

It is just a matter of time before the Nokia Music Store (purchase per track) goes DRM free, but reports from Nokia's 'Comes with Music' launch in Singapore cite Adam Mirabella, Director of Global Digital Music Retail at Nokia, as saying DRM free music is also 'on the roadmap for the future integration of Comes With Music'. Clearly such a move is still some time away and the statement is not definitive, but it's a sign of how keen Nokia is to push its music offerings.

Mobile Advertising Is Last Year's News, and That Can Only Help It Grow

icon

It's all about the App Stores and Content Stores now. That's the wave of the future, didn't you know? It'll drive devices sales, the revenue will get shared between developers, networks and manufacturers, and all will be well with the world. But hold on, what happened to last year's Golden Child? Let's find out.

To Touch or not to Touch?

icon

In contravention of the prevailing spirit of the age, I find myself unconvinced by a touch interface on a phone, having tried using both Apple iPhone and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, both of which I've rejected as my main device for different reasons. And, for a change, there's survey data (see the postscript) to back up my crazed(!) opinions - it seems that the majority of the great unwashed also prefer physical buttons to touch...

The Nokia N85 and N86 8MP, Side by Side

icon

Ewan, proud owner of the Nokia N85, has decided to do a direct comparison of his phone with the new N86 8MP, widely leaked as originally intended on being the N85 8MP. What are the essential differences between the two devices, how significant are they, and were Nokia right to go with the new model number? Ewan says 'Yes', and Rafe agrees, in a special editorial postscript, although their reasons for agreeing are somewhat different - as you'll see.

Camera Nitty Gritty - The Series Overview and Conclusions

icon

Over the last six months on All About Symbian in my 'Camera Nitty Gritty' series, I've tackled a number of phone camera-related issues head on and tried to draw conclusions, even though they sometimes fly in face of phone marketing. In this article, I provide an index to all the Camera Nitty Gritty articles and also summarise some of the individual article conclusions. Xenon flash, resolution, apertures, branded optics, it's all here and neatly broken down.

Mad at MWC? You Do Realise It Means Nothing

icon

In the words of Howard Beale, I'm mad at all the MWC coverage and I've had enough. With Rafe still replacing fluids via the healing power of Lucozade, and Steve off to help ailing family and leaving me the keys to the CMS for the weekend, I might just let off a little humorous steam about the pointlessness of the Mobile World Congress.
