Published by Rafe Blandford at 15:01 UTC, March 2nd 2009
In All About Symbian Insight 61 (AAS Podcast 117) we look back at some of the software highlights of MWC (including a quick N97 mention), discuss the Nokia Netbook rumours / ideas, talk about Ovi Contacts and go over the latest N-Gage developments. You can listen to AAS Insight 55 here or, if you wish to subscribe, here's the RSS feed.
In this podcast we cover:
Multi-touch news (Stantum), Ovi Contacts (brief discussion)
N-Gage update (new devices, Fish Labs games)
Software highlights from Mobile World Congress (MWC) and a quick mention of the N97
Interesting discussion on the netbook (shouldn't be using that term anymore).
I think Netbooks have some life in them yet. Particularly with the focus shifting to improving graphics performance of late.
I've been checking up on the Gigabyte Tablet PC version (M912). Love the idea of having a Netbook as a notepad. Tried a proper Tablet PC and it was just too big. The whole Netbook thing makes it more viable again.
So Netbook would become:
My notepad at work.
A DVD player for the kids in the car (and me at the hotel).
Internet tablet round the house
etc.
Going the opposite way, I was impressed with the Omnia HD having DLNA or DNLA (wireless output to TV). Kind of heads in teh direction Rafe was talking about. I'll just wait for the prices to drop...

This is an excellent podcast, a tour de force. From the opening giggling at Steve's new theme music through to the fascinating debate on netbooks there is never a dull moment. Even Rafe's eight minutes fifty-two seconds went quickly.
I have to say I'm with Ewan and Zuber on the netbook debate. TV out is great but does not help me if I'm on the train and want to do some spreadsheet work. I must have a laptop or netbook for this since doing spreadsheet work on a mobile phone is not nice.
It's possible to get carried away with the idea of convergence. Let's be realistic - sometimes you just need a big screen.
