Rafe's still pounding the floor at MWC 2009, of course, but he took time with MIR's Ben Smith yesterday to give his opinions of Nokia's latest camera flagship, the N86 8MP, in great detail. Below the break is the full six minute video interview, enjoy.
Our final daily podcast from the Mobile World Congress as we look back at the GSMA awards, the environmental impact of mobile phones, chargers, Nokia messaging, SIM cards and almost the Android G2. Enjoy!
Steve and I continue to look over the stories from Barcelona in the second of three planned podcasts discussing the MWC, before a full blown Insight Podcast when Rafe returns. More after the break.
Slightly different format for the podcast this week as Rafe is in Barcelona. Steve and Ewan pick up the reins to talk about the announcements and products on show at the Mobile World Congress in the AAS Podcast #113. In Monday's recap, they set the scene, talk about the annoncements from Sony Ericsson, and discuss Nokia's Monday morning press conference.
Congratulations to Kristian at the Nokia Beta Labs for the blog post this morning. Not for the failure of the Contacts on Ovi database (because we wouldn't want to cheer on that sort of thing), but for coming clean and laying out a full explanation online to the problem. One of the lessons of the modern web is that news travels very fast, and hedging explanations is never a good thing. Looks like The Cluetrain Manifesto is in full operation at Beta Labs.
This could be interesting. We (the writing staff) are under strict instructions from Rafe to not mention leaked products or services. It's long been the All About Symbian policy to discuss the official news and not comment on the rumours – after all, beyond reproducing the same spy-cam picture, rumoured specs and “it's shiny”, there's not much you can add in terms of accurate commentary. But the current wave of leaks should be seen as a good thing, in my opinion. Read on for why...
The recently announced Nokia 5630 might be a cut price S60 model, but by packing in a huge feature list for regular users at an affordable price for them (and the networks), it's a perfect smartphone for the recession, no matter what power users may think of it.
Nokia today announced the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic; it's a S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 phone with a music and multimedia focus. It features a slim design (12mm thick and just 55cc in volume), music-focussed hardware (playback controls, 3.5mm audio jack, 4GB memory card) and software ('Say and Play' enabled music player, Nokia Music Store access and Comes with Music compatibility), an enhanced homescreen (Contacts Bar and Shortcut Bar), rich connectivity options (3.5G and WLAN), US charging and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The 5630 will be available, in selected markets, in the second quarter, at a price of €199 before taxes and subsidies. Read on for more and a video.
Regulars to AAS will know that I hate DRM (Digital Rights Management). Not because it stops me getting stuff for free, though that would undoubtedly be some people's reason, but because it gets in the way of how I want to use content that I've paid for. See below for a tale of woe - I was trying to give Nokia Music Store one last chance and it let me down yet again. Oh, and did I mention that I hate DRM?....
Previously it was a race to get as many people to buy your phone as possible. Now the name of the game is to get as many people to register and use your software as possible – and if they happen to buy a phone as well that's perfect. How does the strategy work out? Let's find out.
Everyone is looking for the next thing in technology. Many companies and smartphone prototypes are made to test out radical ideas to see if they work. Power users are hoping that the next phone will do the 27 things they need it to do; regular users want it to make calls; and half of us wonder why the IrDA port is still there. I reckon it's all about the different directions people try to pull their smartphones, and ultimately all this pulling ends up determining the true direction of change. Read on...
