Nokia 5800 Tutorial: How to set up and use e-mail

icon

Another Nokia 5800 tutorial for beginners, this time we're taking a look at the e-mail options currently available on the 5800. We cover the basics of how to set up a POP or IMAP e-mail account on the phone's built-in messaging app, how to make new e-mails alert you just like text messages, how to set up multiple e-mail accounts on the same phone, and more. (We haven't covered the dedicated Nokia Messaging e-mail client or Gmail's Java client because they don't yet have proper 5800 versions.) As always, you can see a complete list of these how-to articles on our 5800 tutorial index page.

Uno-esque card game Mau Mau is now free on Symbian S60 1st, 2nd, 3rd and UIQ2

icon

Long-time readers may remember we gave Lonely Cat Games' card game Mau Mau quite a positive review, and for those who don't know it's basically Uno played with normal cards. Well, it now appears that the game is available free of charge from LCG's website for all S60 editions and UIQ2 as well. Just download the file from the download page, then head on over to the free unlock code page and use your phone's IMEI. (UPDATE: Apparently there's the old annoying "expired certificate" problem with this file, but you should be able to get round this by altering your phone's date settings to March 2008 instead of March 2009. You can then alter the dates back to normal after installation.)

You can get v2.05 by going into the application and using 'Check for updates'.

The CBC explain how they did an S60-compatible OPML online podcast directory with NetNewsWire

icon

As we mentioned last week, Canada's CBC has set up an online OPML podcast directory which can be used to browse all their audio and video podcasts on an S60 device's Podcasting application. One of the CBC's tech blogs has posted an article explaining how the directory was made, using the Macintosh-based NetNewsWire feed reader. However, you can use other readers on other platforms too, and we recently published a similar OPML directory how-to using Google Reader instead. For those of you who just want to browse the CBC podcast directory on your S60 phone, see our "how to add directories to S60 Podcasting" article which also covers the BBC and NPR directories too.

Free WeatherBug released for the 5800 and S60 5th Edition

icon

Just released in the Nokia 5800's Download-Widgets folder is the free WeatherBug, offering worldwide weather status, forecasts and radar animations, all (optionally) keyed to your GPS location. As the folder suggests, it's implemented as a (Web Runtime) widget, in similar fashion to AccuWeather, released last month in the same folder. How many more ways do we need to find out what the weather's going to be like tomorrow? Screenshots below.

Looking at web browsers on the Nokia 5800

icon

Continuing our 5800 tutorial series, we take a look at how to use the Nokia 5800's built-in S60 web browser, and we also check out how to install and use the alternative Opera Mini browser on the 5800. S60 is fully-featured, Opera Mini is super-fast, but which is better? There's only one way to find out... read the articles. Also, don't forget you can see a complete listing of all these guides on our 5800 tutorial index page.

Top 20 Freeware for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and S60 5th Edition

icon

Two weeks on from my initial Top 10, my feature has grown into a veritable Top 20 Freeware for the Nokia 5800 and S60 5th Edition. Four new entries (hey, it's starting to sound like a proper chart...) and some other tweaks and new URLs. Enjoy. It's also worth noting that many S60 3rd Edition apps work fine on the 5800, but this freeware list is specifically for applications that are custom made for touch and the larger screen.

How to create online podcast directories that are compatible with Nokia Podcasting

icon

Anyone who is personally or professionally involved with podcasts might want to read this All About Symbian guide to creating online podcast directories using RSS feed readers. The addresses of these directories can be added by end users to the Nokia Podcasting application (which comes as standard on all current Nokia S60 devices). As we've previously noted Canada's CBC, the United Kingdom's BBC and America's NPR all have online OPML podcast directories which can be easily accessed through the Podcasting app.

Handy Shopper reviewed for S60 5th Edition

icon

It's smart, it's fully touch and S60 5th Edition-optimised, and it can help you remember to get icing sugar for your partner while down the supermarket. Now how many other bits of software can do that? Handy Shopper represents the archetypal PDA shopping list manager application, here on Symbian OS, but Ewan's been reviewing it and reckons that the code could form the basis of a pretty 'handy' project manager or to do list system as well...

The Nokia 5800 and N97 are now supported by Ovi Sync

icon

Hot off the press, Ovi just added support for S60 5th Edition phones such as the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and N97. Each can now be added in the 'Manage your device' section and, crucially, you can now sync your Calendar, Contacts, To-dos and Notes to Ovi. For 5800 owners like me who have felt a little uneasy about the lack of OTA backup, then this is very welcome. Screen grab proof below.
