Steve's been having a bit of a GPS week here on AAS and here presents his review of SmartphoneWare's Google Earth Companion. Its purpose is to track your journeys and produce native Google Earth files that can be overlaid on the latter's maps and photos.
Rock Your Mobile! has announced the availablity of Movie Tones a Windows application which allows you to create video ringtones for your S60 smartphone from a variety of video and audio file formats. Once you have installed the Mobile Player you can select your created video ringtones as you would any other ringtone.
Mobimate today announced the forthcoming availability of a free version of it's best selling WorldMate application. WorldMate Free Edition will incorporate mobile advertising (provided by a partnership with Amobee Inc.) to provide a revenue stream for MobiMate. WorldMate is a travel information application providing weather forecasts, currency exchange, world clocks and more.
The onslaught of major S60 titles ported over to Symbian OS 9 and S60 3rd Edition seems to have started in earnest. With v3.20, the much-recommended SmartMovie is now fully 3rd Edition-compatible, as well as fixing rebooting problems on Series 80 and 90 communicators.
Steve's the GPS fan in the AAS offices, and he's been trialling ViewRanger to find out how GPS and navigation works when you're away from the road network. ViewRanger gives an annotated panorama of the hills and valleys in front of you. Read why Steve was so impressed.
Hey, Megasoft2000 have just produced the very first 3rd party software for UIQ 3 (the game Bowling). Kudos to them. Now we just need some actual smartphones to run it on! It has now been seven months since the P990 was announced and there's still no sign of it on store shelves. Patience is a virtue!
Comeks is an innovative application that allows you to create comic strips on your phone. You can use images stored on the phone or take new ones with the phone's camera. You then speech and thought bubbles, icons and frames to your images and arrange them into strips (multiple frames) as you go. Your finished creations can be shared via email, MMS and Bluetooth. Comeks works on all S60 2nd Edition phones.
Nokia has licensed Synergenix's reworked Golf Pro Contest (you may remember that their S60 2nd Edition version was a favourite of Rafe and myself) game for their Eseries smartphones. Here, for example, is the E61 download page. Screenshots below the break (no pun intended!)
The software to enable Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on Eseries devices (E60, E61 and E70) is now available via Nokia's Business site. The software is available as a free download and adds the ability to connect to a Microsoft Exchange server and sync contacts, calendar entries, and mail.
We must have missed this at the time but better late than never with the news. There's a whole new release of the one essential S60 utility, FExplorer. 1.16beta adds (among other things) an 'Open with' function, copying of locked files, the choice to hide system or hidden files and optional faster display of folders using built-in icons.
We've been adding to the AllAboutSymbian Support section. It's now got hundreds of well-crafted(!) entries and is well worth a trawl if you hit a problem with your smartphone. All Symbian OS-powered platforms are covered.
Here's an interesting addition to the S60 freeware canon. MobiFlirt is a S60 client for the worldwide craze, in which your smartphone checks out the local 'talent' for you. Never mind being nervous, your smartphone now does the chatting up for you! The mind boggles...
