Exchange ActiveSync software for Eseries devices now available

Published by Rafe Blandford at 10:03 UTC, May 16th 2006

The software to enable Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on Eseries devices (E60, E61 and E70) is now available via Nokia's Business site. The software is available as a free download and adds the ability to connect to a Microsoft Exchange server and sync contacts, calendar entries, and mail.

Contacts and calendar entries use the on board calnedar and contacts databases and programs while a Exchange Mail folder is created within Messaging (as for other mail accounts) for mail synced from the Exchange server.

The Exchange for Mail software means that once you have installed the software all you need to do is set up the approrpiate profile (settings) and synchronise once and all the contacts, calendar entries and mail is synced from your Exchange server. This greatly simplifies setting up phones in corporate environments with Microsoft Exchange servers.

For each profile you can specify a sync type, this can be either manual or always on. In manual mode synchronisation occurs only when the users specifically asks for it. In always on mode the server will notify the device of any content changes made immediately.  Content changes include the receipt of new email, and thus email is pushed to the device (providing the server supports this). The device will sync with the sever every 15 minutes to allow changes made on the device to sync to the server. You can also specify, among other things, whether synchronisation should occur when you are roaming from your home network.

From the user manaul:

What is synchronization?

Synchronization makes the email, calendar, and contacts content on your mobile phone identical to the content of your Microsoft Exchange account. You can customize the way you synchronize by setting up a profile in which you can:

  • Select the content you want to synchronize - email, calendar, contacts, or all three.
  • Set up a schedule by which Mail for Exchange automatically synchronizes. (You can also synchronize manually at any time.)
  • Resolve content conflicts during synchronization by specifying whether the content of your account on the Microsoft Exchange server or your mobile phone prevails when a conflict occurs.
  • Select Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to increase the security between your mobile phone and the Microsoft Exchange server.
  • Further information is available in the Mail for Exchange user manual.

More information is available in the Mail for Exchange user manual .

News Discussion

Hi all,

Thought I'd try this download on my 9300 just incase it worked, the Nokia site does not specify the use of S60 only, but it refuses to install so I guess it's not compatible afterall.:frown:

Does anyone know if a S80 version is going to be made available? If so, when?

I'm on a 30 day trial of Dataviz Roadsync which has been working great (apart from the inability to sync sub-folders of my Inbox). But, this is a $100 product so I'd prefer a freebie from Nokia if possible.

Cheers
Jim
