Guest writer Attila brings us a review of another 'handy' utility. This time, keeping out unwanted calls, it's Handy Blacklist. Summary: works as advertised but could do with even more flexibility.
Attila reviews Handy Converter, perhaps the perfect currency conversion utility for smartphones. He was looking at the S60 3rd Edition version, but it's also available for Series 60 and all UIQ platforms...
Those S60 guys love giving away free games each month. This time round it's JumpShot, a basketball game for S60 2nd Edition devices. Go to S60.com, log in and go to 'My Exclusives'. All previous free games for S60 2nd and 3rd Edition devices are also still available, by the way.
Jackpot Casino is fully featured casino game, ported from other handheld platforms and now available for UIQ 3 smartphones. Ewan's been reviewing it, here. Summary: well implemented and good use of the touchscreen, though perhaps winning against the 'house' is just a little too easy...
Nokia has gone widget-mad, introducing full widget (mini-apps built on Ajax and Javascript) support into S60, beginning with S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (so we're looking at next year for the first devices with full widget support). Widgets will run under 'Web Run-Time', as explained in the full press release, below.
Ewan's a messaging power user and he's been smitten by a new utility, ThreadSMS for S60 3rd Edition, promising Treo-like threaded 'conversations' held by SMS. Here's the review.
Nokia has released Nokia Video Manager for Windows PC. The software helps you copy videos to your phone and transcodes them on the fly (converts them to an optimal format). Nokia Video Manager supports conversion from avi, mpeg, wmv and mov (DivX, XVid, MPEG-2 and Quicktime codecs) to mp4 (H.264). As such it is only compatible with devices that can play back the H.264 format.
Nokia have released iSync plug-ins for a number of their recent phones including the Nokia N95, Nokia E65, and Nokia N76. The release of these plug-ins mean all currently available S60 phones will sync with a computer running Mac OS X.
Thanks to Darla for the scoop on the new version of PC Suite, available now, with selective content restoring, full Windows Vista support and firmware update notifications.
In part three of our series of reviews Steve looks at the camera performance and functionality of the Nokia N95. The review focuses on still image capture (we'll look at video capture later) and makes a direct comparison with a dedicated digital camera.
Projekt, a popular Symbian OS outliner, is being ported to S60 3rd Edition. Asri al-Baker has been beta testing it and some screenshots are shown below. With Projekt, you can manage your lists, todos, mindmaps and shopping lists.
