An important note to all who were interested in my feature on file and folder syncing from earlier in the week. Please don't entrust your master files to this PC Suite feature as it's horribly, horribly buggy. My apologies, read on for more.
Sony Ericsson, Motorola and UIQ Technology today announced that Motorola has taken a 50% stake in UIQ Technology. UIQ Technology was previously wholly owned by Sony Ericsson following its purchase from Symbian earlier this year. This represents a very significant endorsement of UIQ by Motorola and underlines Motorola's plan to expand its high end multimedia portfolio using UIQ powered phones.
Google has created a version of its Google Maps application for S60 3rd Edition phones. Google Maps is now a native Symbian OS 9 application, which gives better overall performance compared to Java version. As an added bonus, the application now supports the use of the internal GPS in relevant phones; allowing you to see your current location. Read on for plenty of screenshots and a quick run through of the features.
Ewan's got a fairly honed sense of hearing, which is why Rafe and I packed him off with a Bluetooth stereo headset to investigate wireless sound quality and reliability. Did A2DP pass the test and is it ready for the prime time? A qualified yes for low grade pop listening, but an emphatic no (for several reasons) for anyone serious about their music...
Guest writer Asri al-Baker has been trialling the brand new CorePlayer ports for both UIQ 3 (on his Sony Ericsson P990i) and S60 3rd Edition (on his Nokia N95). How well does this hallowed media player stand up to video and audio tests on both Symbian interfaces? Can it really play any media file in any format, codec or resolution? Find out in his CorePlayer Mobile review.
There have been claims of mysterious flying saucers carrying alien creatures for over sixty years now, but very few supposed witnesses have ever taken pictures or filmed these craft. Now that cameraphones and smartphone are becoming ubiquitous, will we see a flood of UFO images, or a drought of UFO sightings? Krisse investigates!
This is the question I've been trying to answer in Smartphones Show 44, using a Nokia N95 and a Bluetooth keyboard cold turkey for a working week. Did the experiment succeed? Also, Rafe and I were at HTC's big launch two days ago in London. Non-Symbian, but still very interesting, show 44 includes my video report.
Quickoffice has just publicly released v4.5.25.0 of its S60 office suite, complete with brand new Mail for Exchange 2.0 integration, so you can pluck attachments from your company mail server, edit and return them quickly. They fixed quite a few bugs too, as I found out when compiling my revised review of Quickoffice 4.5, bumping up the suite's review score by one point to that crucial 90%. Read to the bottom of the review though, and you'll see how they can go higher...
In what is one of the most significant technology acquisitions of the year Nokia has announced it is to acquire Navteq for $8.1 billion.
