The Nokia N72, announced yesterday, is Nokia's new Nseries fashion phone for emerging markets. Rafe in his Nokia N72 preview summarises and explains the phones features, capabilities and market positioning and concludes that the Nokia N72 could be a best seller.
A S60 blog reports that the Nokia E61 support pages are online, which means it's shipping somewhere in the world. Free software for this S60 3rd edition device includes WorldMate and Handy Expense.

SEPT Solutions has announced a new version of Mobile Search that will work on S60 3rd Edition devices. We still think this function should be part of the OS, but until that day, this is a good stop-gap.
Canalys has released it's latest set of figures for the global smart mobile device in Q1 2006. Shipments up are 55% year on year with Nokia increasing its global market share to 54% with 8.6 million devices sold. This, together with strong performances from Mitsubishi and Sharp (4th and 5th in global sales respectively), gives Symbian its highest ever market share at 69%, with Microsoft second at 12%. Additionally the Asia-Pacific market has over taken the EMEA market in smart mobile device shipments.
On the day of the announcement of the Nokia N73 and N93, no prizes for guessing what Symbian's David Wood's latest topic is over on symbian.com. In Insight no. 8, he goes into even more detail than I've done in the past, estimating that the smartphone is on the verge of forcing into extinction over 30 categories of mobile device or service.
Ho yes. This could be the smartphone convergence-mad Steve's been waiting for - the Nokia N93 has DVD-quality video recording, 3,2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, landscape mode and every other S60 3rd Edition refinement. Here's his assessment of the new Nokia flagship.
The new Nseries devices (N93, N73 and N72) will all have built-in support for Yahoo's! Flickr service. No details as yet on the exact nature, but given other S60-based Flickr apps, and the press release comments of having the facility in the Gallery application, I'm expecting an extra 'Send to Flickr' on the menu options. Following up the recent S60 YahooToGo! application, this is a great bundling service for Flickr.
Nokia has announced a new multimedia showcase for its Nseries smartphones, specifically the DVD quality N93: www.nokia.com/nseries/studio. Initially the movies will be made by professionals, by invitation only, but there are plans to open the gallery up to all-comers in the summer. Full press release below the break...

The N93 is focused on video recording, it has a Carl Zeiss 3.2 megapixel camera with DVD quality capture at 30 frames per second, a 3x optical zoom, video stabilization and runs S60 3rd Edition. The N73 is a small but state of the art smartphone with an emphasis on camera functionality. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, built in Flickr support and runs S60 3rd Edition. The N72 is an all round smartphone with an emphasis on style and fashion (available in black or glossy pink). It has a 2 megapixel camera, music player, FM radio and runs S60 2nd Edition.
To go along with the new NSeries devices, Nokia have announced three new Bluetooh headsets. One lightweight (BH700), a minimalist (BH-300) and one dubbed the 'classic' (the BH-600). More after the break.
Just to prove that there's plenty of life left in your old UIQ 2.x smartphone, Steve's been reviewing Flip Extender, a terrific way of accessing full UIQ functionality with your P900/P910 flip closed, while Ewan reviews Clarissa, a reminder utility that pops up notes when making or receiving calls.
Blockeroo is an excellent freeware puzzle game. It is a multiplayer game played over Bluetooth. It does have a single player practise mode, but even better it also has an AI mode, which means you can play against your phone in multiplayer mode.
This Googlified version of the Powerpoint slides from a recent Windows Mobile development session makes interesting reading (hint: use ctrl-A in your browser, to highlight all the white-on-white text) and, between all the techy mumbo jumbo, seems to show Microsoft thinking along the same lines as Symbian OS (and specifically OS 9), but with timelines maybe 2 years behind in many areas. Comments welcome.
