With a strong selection of built in applications and utilities, it sometimes takes a lot to make a ‘helper’ application stand out. Clarissa is at first glance not a very useful application, it prints up a note you’ve added to someone’s name the next time they call you.

The point of course is that Clarissa does one thing really well. It acts as an aide memoire, to help you pass messages to people – without using any of the fancy Internet access points, email or messaging tools. Nope, you simply add a text note to someone’s name, and whenever you make or receive a call from them, the note pops up at the bottom of the screen.

It’s actually incredibly useful if you have the mindset that jumps between a million thoughts at once. Rather than try to remember that you have to ask your flatmate to get more milk, ask your tutor about an appeal, and remembering to wish your Mum Happy Birthday, you can open up the Clarissa application. Select the name from your contacts database, and you can decide which text note to use – either the text you enter into Clarissa, or the attached text note from the contacts database.

While it would be nice to be able to have the Clarissa functionality as a menu option in the Contacts application, the integration with the notes field is a very welcome addition. One other great feature is the limitations tab. This is a time where you don’t want the note to appear when the call happens.

At $25, this isn’t a cheap application, I would have thought that for what this offers, $15 would be a better ticket, but there’s no doubting the usefulness of the app which probably justifies the value. Finally, I also love the note on the author’s web site that says “If you want any features to be added to our applications, contact us!” Now that to me is the sign of a good shareware company, and makes them one to watch.
