Nokia 5800 at £249 SIM Free in the UK on January 23rd

Published by Rafe Blandford at 16:33 GMT, January 7th 2009

Nokia's first S60 touch device, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, also known colloquially as the 'Tube', will go on sale in the UK on Friday 23rd January for £249 SIM Free (includes VAT). For the first week, it will be available exclusively through the Nokia Flagship Stores in Heathrow Terminal 5 and Regent Street. From Friday 30th January, the Nokia 5800 will then become available through Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile UK, Virgin Mobile, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U. You can now also pre-order the 5800 from Nokia's online store.

With a SIM free price of £250, the Nokia 5800 should be available, via operators, for 'free', even on mid tier tariffs.

It is worth noting that a Comes with Music version of the 5800 will likely become available at a later date. Based on the cost of the N95 8GB and N96 'Comes with Music' editions, the 5800 'Comes with Music' edition will likely cost around £300. That's an impressive figure for a capable multimedia creation and consumption device that comes with a year of free music (and happens to be a phone too).

Impressive. Considering the current value of the pound versus the euro, it might be worth a trip to Britain just to pick one of these up ;)

If you're getting one pound to one euro, this phone is 100 euros cheaper in Britain than in Finland, that's a difference of about 30%!

That's really made things interesting. What a great bargain at SIM Free even. I might make it a network upgrade if Orange put it on mid-tier price plans. Although I'd prefer an N97 with a Xenon flash.

I hate you Rafe!!! Just today i was happy to have my 5800 from honk kong finally delivered, then you just come and spring this on me.

I called into the regent street store weeks ago and it was confirmed by two reps that it was february. damn them.

I hope the honk kong built will be compatible with UK firmware and/or softwares.

I would buy one of these, if it wan't so enormous and didn't have atouch interface.

Play.com are showing it at £469.99.

Err....different phone entirely then? N78 maybe?

I suspect me and my N96 will be parting company in the next few weeks, we just don't get along. After the N95 & the N95 8gb - which were both superb - I think the N96 is vastly overpriced, it creaks, the navi wheel makes a sticky noise and the slider wobbles. Nokia - your build quality has gone a leap backwards. I think I'll get a 5800 and hopefully it'll be a bit more sturdy and better built. And I can't help but think the N97 reminds me of that phone (brick) that HTC built...

And, go through Quidco or Top cash back and get 5% off at Nokia shop - makes it about £236 sim free... sounds a bit more tempting....

Oooh that's really tempting pricing, but before I place my pre-order is there any word on when the CWM version will be available ?
Unregistered
Any idea on when a CWM edition will be released? I'm desperate to get my hands on a 5800 but want CWM included..or can you update with CWM at a later date with the first release?
Rafe
I've no information on the CwM version release date, but if I had to guess I'd say April - difficult to know really.

At the moment you can not add CwM to an existing phone so upgrading to the CwM version is probably not going to be possible.

Orophin Anwarunya - heh - but I think you'll have no problems - I've happily used HK / Asian version before.

N97 is a different device - its going to cost twice as much. Really very different devices too. Be interesting to see what other cheap touch devices Nokia comes out with, but for now the 5800 is fantastic value in my opinion.

Anyone know if you can hack Nokia phones with a different OS etc. like you can HTC stuff.

This would make an excellent candidate for Android. I'm just not sure where S60 is heading (same with WM) and so it would be great to get some hardware I could jump ship on. I prefer to get good use out of my puchases, rather than cgange every 6 months..

So why does the Nokia shop state 'stock due 23 February' for this phone?

I want to get the CWM edition on contract, any ideas on if the phone'll cost extra with CWM? Not sure how it works..

My friend just got one of this from UAE and out of the box, the flash led was not there (Dual-Led), one led was stuck on but the other led was not there, so looking in the box he found the led. The prb is we cannot put it back as it requires soldering back the led on the board, this is really disappointing from nokia, such low product quality tht the led falls out from a brand new phone.
