We've been seeing several of Nokia's beta projects surfacing recently. Now there's a proper home page for them in the shape of Nokia Beta Labs. Worth a regular visit at least, though we'll buzz you here if something great gets launched. Via Tommi.
Nokia has gone widget-mad, introducing full widget (mini-apps built on Ajax and Javascript) support into S60, beginning with S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (so we're looking at next year for the first devices with full widget support). Widgets will run under 'Web Run-Time', as explained in the full press release, below.
Thanks to Stefan for pointing me towards a couple of interesting videos. Here the TV Out capabilities of the Nokia N95 are demoed well, watching a video on three different screens in one shot, while here one of the developers of VoIP software demonstrates how Internet telephony is 'missing' on branded/locked versions of the N95.
Well, as long as you're a pre-pay (pay as you go) user anyway. The info doesn't seem to have made it onto Vodafone's web site yet, but as from 1st June, pre-pay users in the UK will be charged £2/MB for mobile data rather than the current £7.30/MB. It's not exactly flat rate, but it's a step in the right direction for those of us that don't want to go on contract.
Here's your chance to win your very own W950i. We're just looking for a little feedback and an entertaining and creative comment - if you'd like to win this UIQ 3 Walkman phone, see the competition page.
Thanks to Darla for the scoop on the new version of PC Suite, available now, with selective content restoring, full Windows Vista support and firmware update notifications.
Continuing the current N95 surge of content, there's a torrent of new devices hitting the high street, with AAS readers now owning them out in the real world. Here's the AAS N95 discussion forum - it's your first port of call for asking questions.
Although not Symbian-specific, AAS audio podcast 19 is well worth a listen, if only because Ewan managed to catch Jeff Hawkins (the guy behind the PalmPilot, Handspring Treo, etc.) and talks to him about his theories on how the brain works and how this can be applied to mobile computing.
Google has rolled out a new version of its mobile optimized search site, including a simpler interface, new result page layouts, location awareness, quick links to build a mobile customized homepage and easy access to Gmail mobile. In your smartphone's web browser, type google.com/m
Ewan's been in the USA, as you may have gathered, but he's been keeping up with stories from around the world on his Nokia N91. Here he reviews NewsCopier, a Java applet for any smartphone, presenting you with RSS-fed news simply and effectively.
In advance of my upcoming N95 camera review, and following on from our N95 part 1 (Navigation) and N95 part 2 (Music) reviews, here's a taster gallery, with assorted wildlife and domestic pets(!), courtesy of Rafe. Each image can be clicked through to show the full 5 megapixel image.
You probably didn't make CTIA 2007 and the Symbian-sponsored Smartphone Summit, but don't worry - Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford's keynote and various interviews are all online for viewing at your convenience. Video quality isn't perfect, but still well worth a look.
Smartphones Show 28 is an eleven minute Nokia N95 review special, complete with iPhone-esque intro. I look at how well (or badly) it does at replacing each of 11 standalone devices. As ever, it's in cross-platform MP4 format, if your desktop can't run Quicktime or similar then here's a slightly lower quality version on YouTube.
Broadtexter is an SMS service for bands to stay in touch with their fans - they describe it as a mobile fan club - people can subscribe from the band's web site to recieve text alerts. Ewan caught up with the founders of the service recently at SXSW to find out more - the interview is in AAS podcast 18.
