The Nokia 5630 is the latest in Nokia's XpressMusic range and continues the trend of providing a combination of excellent value and feature rich devices. It follows in the wake of the Nokia 5320, from which it inherits its 'Say and Play' music feature and custom homescreen, and the Nokia 5800, from which it receives the concept of the people-centric Contacts Bar.
Key hardware features of the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic
- Dimensions of 112 x 46 x 12 mm (55 cubic centimetres) and a weight of 83g.
- Rich connectivity options with quad band GSM (800/900/1800/1900), dual band WCDMA (900/2100) with HSDPA, WiFi, USB and Bluetooth. Forum Nokia also indicates this is a HSUPA device (faster 3G uploads), which is a first for a S60 phone.
- USB charging with simultaneous USB connectivity, including support for HiSpeed USB 2.0 data transfers.
- 3.2 megapixel (2048 x 1536) camera (aperture: F2.4, focal range: 50 cm to infinity) with a dual LED flash and support for VGA resolution video capture at 15 frames per second.
- 2.2 inch QVGA (240 x 320) TFT screen.
- 4GB memory card included with the phone (enough room for 3000 tracks at optimal encoding), with support for microSDHC cards up to 16GB in size. 60 MB of internal memory.
- Dedicated music controls of the left hand side of the device with a 3.5mm audio jack on the top of the device and an integrated FM radio (Internet Radio supported via software).
- BL-4CT (860 mAh) battery.
On the hardware front, the most notable omission is GPS, but given the price point and the music focus this is appropriate for the device's target market and follows Nokia's usual segmentation strategy.
The Forum Nokia specifications indicate that the 5630 utilises a ARM 11 600 MHz single chip processor, this suggests a new (or, more likely, an updated) hardware platform.
Key software features of the Nokia 5630 XpressMusic
- Runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 on Symbian OS 9.3
- Features a customised homescreen with a 'Contacts Bar' which provides direct access to up to 20 contacts and includes a communication history/log for each person, which is shown when the contact is highlighted. The homescreen also offers application shortcut bars with quick access to Music Player, Radio, Web, Search, N-Gage and Photos as well as the usual homescreen plug-ins for music (current track information), Calendar (upcoming appointments) and WiFi.
- Music software features include 'Say and Play' (voice controlled music search), access to Nokia Music Store on the device and music management with Nokia Music for the PC (drag and drop/sync transfer via MTP). In select markets, the 5320 will be sold as a 'Comes with Music' device.
- UPnP capable device with DLNA Certification, which allows you to control and playback music, videos and images (from a server, or from your device) on other UPnP devices (e.g. XBox 360, Playstation 3, Nokia Home Music). This is the first non-Nseries S60 device to include this feature.
- N-Gage compatible device. Other Ovi services include Share online and Nokia Maps. It is likely that the 5630 will be fully compatible with the full range of Ovi services.

With the 5630, Nokia is taking advantage of software it has developed for earlier phones. Most notable are the inclusion of applications and features which were previously Nseries only. Among these are UPnP support and the Photos application which replaces Gallery. The device specifications indicate the device will ship with out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange (Mail for Exchange), Nokia Messaging and standard email.
More comment on the 5630 very soon.
