In audio podcast no.8, Ewan Spence interviews PsiLoc and Bitween, two long time developers working in the Symbian OS world. Applications featured include Remote Control, Wireless Presenter and Mobile Fax.
After years of saying 'No', top handheld games producer Astraware has finally admitted that Symbian OS is on its radar, planning to produce at least a handful of titles for S60 3rd Edition and UIQ 3 in 2007. Let's hope it's earlier rather than later.
I'm sorry, I just can't help it. It's 'The Emperor's New Clothes' all over again. But.... "What's the fuss all about?" Push email. The term has become a tick box feature that every new smartphone HAS to have before it's taken seriously. No push email? No good for a professional then. What rubbish. Read on, and then have your say in the comments!
We don't normally link to outrageous rumours, but in this case there are too many to ignore, all in the one post, over on Esato. Specifically, possible successors to the UIQ 3 W950, P990 and M600..... Mind you, they're only rumours, folks!
Demonstrating the difference a year or two's extra development makes is Documents To Go for UIQ 3. A worthwhile investment for owners of the P990i and M600i, which already have Quickoffice built-in? If you're a real road warrior then I'd say so. Here's my review.
Ewan provides over a dozen pointers for would-be successful hobbyist programmers and small developers who'd like to create successful applications and games.
I was resisting posting about this because I think they're in danger of complicating the application, but Opera Mini is now up to v3.0, with photo publishing (to an Opera photo server), RSS (news/blogs) and HTTPS (secure site) support, plus various usability improvements. It's still the best way to keep your GPRS bill down though....
In another interview culled from the maelstrom that was the Smartphone Show, Ewan chats to Mimmis Olsen from Sony Ericsson Developer World about UIQ 3, developers, phones and more, in AAS audio podcast number 5.
UK DJ Zane Lowe's web site is currently featuring a mix competition, whereby you upload a mix of your own and the best mixes then all win a Sony Ericsson UIQ 3-powered W950i smartphone. Being over 40, of course, I have absolutely no idea what a 'mix' is... something to do with making cakes?
Sony Ericsson has added JSR 226 to its Symbian Java Platfrom version 3 which is used in the P990, M600 and W950. The W950 ships with JSR 26 support while the P990 and W950 can be upgraded via firmware. JSR 226 adds support for the use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG Tiy).
Long-suffering users of the Sony Ericsson P990i will be watching next week eagerly, being the one Lars promised us the big new firmware update, way back at the AAS pub meet. And it seems there's a bit of a buzz just starting, with a screenshot of new v10 firmware right here. We'll post here as soon as SEUS actually has it online.
Ewan has put his thinking kilt on and ponders whether the problem of the illegal software scene can be solved by a white knight - Symbian Signed. It is a controversial area and amongst the AAS team there are a range of opinions.
