Sony Ericsson adds JSR 226 (SVG) to Symbian JP-3

Sony Ericsson has added JSR 226 to its Symbian Java Platfrom version 3 which is used in the P990, M600 and W950. The W950 ships with JSR 26 support while the P990 and W950 can be upgraded via firmware. JSR 226 adds support for the use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG Tiy).

SVG uses  XML to descibes two dimensional vector images which can be static or animated. SBG Tiny (SVG Mobile) is a subset of the full SVG specifications.

The advantage of using SVG graphics is that they are usually much smaller than other graphic files. In addition because they are vectored based they can, unlike bitmaps, easily be resized without losing quality.

Developers should be careful when using this JSR on UIQ 3 phones as early P990s and M600s do not have support for the JSR. The phones can be updated to support FSR 226 by upgrading to the latest firmware, but not all users will have done this.
