The Nokia N93 is THE hot convergence smartphone of the moment and kudos to Nokia for loaning us a couple ahead of public availability. We'll have more on the N93 very shortly, but read on for a teaser to whet your appetite.
Two new S60 3rd Edition file managers and one more on the way... and all freeware! Y-Browser was released a couple of days ago, SysExplorer is out today and the developer of the rightly famous FExplorer has apparently just got the N80 and I'll bet a 3rd Edition beta won't be far away.
As part of a series of in depth navigation reviews, Steve Litchfield takes Wayfinder Navigator 6 for a spin on the Nokia E61. With prices starting at 100 Euros and compatibility with S60, UIQ, Series 80 and Windows Mobile, Wayfinder has become a major player in this field.
It seems that Flash Lite mini-games are starting to appear. Ewan's been trying out an example, Office Frenzy, and finds similarities to the Game 'n' Watch toys of the 1980s...
Just a short note for UK residents that PDA Essentials magazine, for which I write most of the Symbian OS content, has had a major face lift (starting at issue 51, which is out today) and now has Symbian as a more or less equal platform (with Palm OS and Windows Mobile) at last. Issue 51 has a 'Focus on S60' intro piece, maybe worth pointing friends and colleagues at the magazine in WH Smiths?
ShoZu the photo and video uploader for mobile phones is now available for S60 3rd Edition devices such as the Nokia N80, N71 and N91. ShoZu allows you to send media to Flickr and similar photo and video sharing services. Several improvements have been made to the server side of ShoZu including support for more services (MetaWeblog API and FTP) and more flexible email support.
RSS is fast becoming a tool of the mainstream and not a preserve of the geek. Ewan reviews Headline, a new S60 3rd Edition (and 2nd Edition, etc.) RSS client that offers every feature you could ever wish for and which may just change the way you keep up with the world...
Although compiled in the USA and with a natural bias, this M:Metrics survey makes interesting reading. Highlights include smartphone penetration in the UK being 6.6%, S60 smartphones topping smartphone sales in Europe (no surprise there) and that around half of all N70 owners go online for content.
Navicore Personal, a GPS navigation solution, is now available for S60 3rd Edition phones. Navicore allows you to easily find your destination whether you are driving, walking or cycling. Additional features include a points of interest database, traffic information, saftey camera information and location messaging. Also of particular note is that existing customers can download a S60 3rd Edition version free of charge.
Now, I know we've had our very own Ewan's original review of the Nokia N90, but I just came across this second opinion, from the point of view of a keen photographer, Martin Geddes. Hmm.... lives in Edinburgh, has two kids, keen on S60 smartphones - are Ewan and Martin the same person? (!)
