Google Releases Native Search client for S60

Published by Rafe Blandford at 12:23 UTC, February 21st 2008

Google has released a native client for Google search for S60 phones. The application, available via the Google mobile site, places a shortcut to a Google search box on the Idle screen (unfortunately only for devices with either a 'Ctrl' or 'pencil/edit' key), but is also accessible via the usual application launcher on all devices. Typing in a query to the search box and pressing search opens up Web and takes you to the results page for that Google query in one go. It uses the new Google Mobile search service we mentioned a few weeks ago. Read on for more.

Last week Google and Nokia announced that Google Search would be added to the Nokia Mobile Search application that ships with all recent S60 devices. This means that Google Search will soon be available via Nokia's search client. As such, Google's release of its own native search client is something of an unnecessary repetition. However the benefits of the Google search client is its immediate availability, its specificity and the fact it is much faster loading than Nokia's client. I was able to go from a standing start to a search result in around 5 seconds (less if you're quick at T9). The likely time from a cold start (no existing connection) is around 15 seconds. That's likely to be quicker than going via the browser, although if you have Google set as your home page in the browser the advantages are relatively small.

The application adds a shortcut to the Google Search client from the Idle screen. The second screenshot shows the Google search box as it appears from the Idle screen shortcut (it looks the same if you launch via the application menu).

On activating a search, the Google Search client launches Web and loads the result page for your query ('symbian news' in the example above). The application has a few configuration options, such as the ability to change your location (e.g. enter another post code - also done via web page), switch to 'classic' results (instead of the blended mobile results) and the ability to disable the quick key (access from the Idle screen).

Google mobile search has good local search support. Here you can see I used the keyword 'cinema' and it returned a list of films playing at my local cinema. It also offers a map showing the cinema location and a link enabling you to call the cinema. These are the blended results we talked about in our earlier news article.

You can download the new client software at mobile.google.com. Look for the Search (Download) link.

This continues the trend of Google releasing downloadable clients for its various services. It follows on from the release of the YouTube Mobile client, the native Symbian version of Google Maps and the GMail client. I feel this is a more realistic approach to getting a large number of people to use its mobile services than developing the Android platform (!! - Ed)

It's disappointing that the idle/standby screen implementation is via the pencil key though, especially as this key is now deprecated and not present on most new S60 phones. It is interesting to note that Samsung have managed to implement a Google search box on their S60 phones using the standard Idle screen architecture.

A more standard standby 'plugin' would have worked better, along the lines of the integral Nokia Search 3.0 pane in the N95 8GB, for example. Hopefully, a future version will see a single Search box, implemented properly, with input from both Nokia and Google, as per their new agreement.

Nothing there when I go to their mobile site.

Have they *not* released it for China, I wonder?

Thanks corrected the link error.

The screenshots are from an N95 - 8GB - sim is in another device - hence offline profile. The Ovi icons are for Share Online v3, the others are standard on the N95 8GB.

OK, now know I have to use the "pen" key to bring up the search.

Now stop showing the little fade in "press \ to search". I hate it. Make it go away!

But I like quick access to Google.

*sigh*

Nice work... but oh how I long for a native Gmail app!

Thanks, it works nicely on my E90, but only if I use the "standard" browser. It didn't work from the Opera mini browser.

The little popup 'press ctrl to search' is annoying so I've disabled that and moved the app to an Active Standby icon slot. It's a handy app to have for quick searching but I too look forward to Google's integration with Nokia's search program.

WOW this is cool! I like that it autostarts with the phone :)

I find after using the app my phone doesn't disconnect automatically, I have to do a manual disconnection, which is kinda annoying. Does anyone else get this?

Looks like this service has not gone online in the Netherlands (yet)

Chini, try changing your location. There should be a link "Not in Nehtherlands?". Go with the United States at least till you download the application.

Cheers.

Hmm weird, I guess I have to withdraw my previous comment - the app download is not available from desktop clients (at least in NL) and only through the S60-internal browser on my E61... ;??? Google, are you trying to hide or offer new functionality?

Ok, but still:
Opera 8.65 shows up exactly the same front page on mobile.google.com as the Symbian browser, except that one "search (download)" link. I don't wanna complain about the service of little presents, especially when they are as lovely as this little app... I just don't want google or any other company to act as a guardian for me, I have no choice ;%

Anyway, thanks Google - great app you came up with here!

Jay3gsm, it does disconnect after use, so I don't know what could be ailing you.

A nice touch is that it initiates the connection as soon as you press the Ctrl button so by the time you finish entering your query the data connection is ready to go.

The only thing i'd like is an option to disable the popup notification every time a home screen is displayed. No reason to remind me every time what button i have to press to invoke it.

Overall, it's a nice little application -- a keeper.
I'm still having issues with the connection, still, as long as I remember to disconnect, there will be no harm done

You can disable the pop up in the settings, but then the pencil key shortcut doesn't work. I've set it to one of my favourite apps to launch is only a couple of clicks away, no great hardship.

nice app, but i guess i wont be using it since i dont like to have stuff running in the background. Especially since i am using an e90 (i am lucky if i get two full days battery life at a stretch). Not that i am complaining, given the kind of empowerment this device gives me, but i still have to be careful about battery consumption. But i am sure this will be a real treat for e61/i users.

Nice app indeed, but I too won't be using it since the standby thing conflicts with SkyeQuiKey which I find way more important for me. As a standalone app, it may sound nice, but I've got Google set up as my homepage in Web anyway, and that's just a long press on 0 away...

i don't see how this is different from going to their website with the s60 browser.

Now if only google would program this to search stuff on my handset too, i will remove nokia search.

Doesn't the long press on the '0' launch the services browser and not the web browser? You can obviously check out the results better on the web browser as compared to the services browser.

I second the need for a native Gmail app, but otherwise nice little app (if kinda useless), miles better then Nokia search

Just one showstopper problem - it needs to be able to launch Opera Mini (or Opera or whatever) rather than the annoying default browser. Like the PC Gmail Notifier does. And the standby screen popup is very ugly, especially with your own wallpaper.
NZtechfreak
In future iterations I hope the prompt is removed from the Active Standby screen, but the pencil key shortcut still works. As it stands this doesn't really offer an advance for me as Google is my homepage and the browser is an Active Standby App...
Kerskine
Wow - both maps and search work great on my pokey E62, and I don't get the annoying "Allow application to access network" idiocy that AT&T forces. Now - a native Gmail app would be great!
