Additional language support and updates for Swype

Published by at

Swype, an alternative text entry system based on finger 'swipes', now supports additional languages. A number of language packs have been released for both the S60 5th Edition and Symbian^3 versions of Swype and are now available via Nokia Beta Labs. Additionally an updated version of Swype, for Nokia's S60 5th Edition, has been released, which fixes a number of bugs. An updated version for Symbian^3 will appear in the Ovi Store in the near future.

Language support

The following languages are available for download: Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French (European), German, Greek, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (European), Russian, Slovak, Swedish, Thai and Vietnamese. Swype comes with English, Spanish, French Canadian and Brazilian Portuguese languages pre-installed.

Beta Labs notes:

Once the initial [Swype] package is installed, you can download and install additional languages. You still need to ensure that the main application is installed first, and that the phone's Writing Language fits with one of Swype's supported languages. Since Swype has its own language selection, we recommend you set the phone's Writing Language to English, then use Swype to change the language dictionary in use for writing.

More details are available at Nokia Beta Labs.

Additional language support is very important as it significantly increases the number of people able to make use of Swype as a text entry system. The significance of the availability of software or functionality in a native language is often under estimated. In general developers will be able to reach more users through localisation (translations) than by adding additional features.

Updated version for S60 5th Edition

The update version of Swype for S60 5th Edition is a release candidate, which means it is likely the last beta release. Once final quality control checks have been made it will be published on the Ovi Store. The updated version fixes a number of bugs, allows for easier downloading of additional languages and improves performance.
