In which I explore the current Nokia Nseries Download! application/service in gory detail... everything you ever wanted to know about which bits are worth downloading and which err... aren't. Download! is demonstrated on the Nokia N95, but most applications are just as applicable to other recent Nseries smartphones.
In another far sighted editorial, Krisse looks at TV-out gaming on the Nokia N95, seeing how well a selection of top games work on the big screen and with the aid of a Bluetooth keyboard as controller. Of course, what's really needed is a Bluetooth joystick as well...
Nokia Multimedia Transfer (previously Nokia Media Transfer) has been updated to version 1.1 Beta. The program allows you to transfer multimedia from your Apple computer to your S60 phone. Updates in this version include support for Eseries devices, preservation of meta data in mp4 transcoding and improved support for iTunes Plus tracks.
Yeah, they're Java games, but EA have been adding to the Nokia Nseries Download! selection in the last week. See below for a sample catalog screenshot, but the games now include "Fight Night Round 3", "Dakar 2007", "Need for Speed Carbon", "FIFA Street 2", "The Sims 2 Pets", "Scrabble", "Orcs and Elves" and "Medal of Honour".
CoolGorilla, whose free Java talking phrasebooks we reported a month ago, have now managed to shoehorn the same audio/text functions into a mobile-focussed web version, ostensibly aimed at the iPhone but which works perfectly in all recent S60 smartphones, for example. Type www.coolgorilla.com/iphone into your smartphone's web browser.
Proving that Flash Lite is being used by at least some developers for real world projects, mobiExplore Croatia is new freeware for all versions of S60. Don't worry, the application itself is apparently all in English!
Olive Tree have updated their free Bible reading software for S60 3rd Edition to v3.67. New features include extra search options, two smaller font sizes, a new menu structure, a 5-way verse chooser and combined storage card and main memory locations into one library. Here's the Bible Reader download page and here's the most popular free modern Bible.
Steve Litchfield has been getting twitchy feet over his reliance on Outlook as the PIM partner to his smartphones and he's overjoyed to find a Web-based PIM that's totally cross platform, that supports just about every smartphone ever made and which is completely free! In this walkthrough, he explains how to set Mobical up and start syncing.
The Nokia E90's free 3D driving game Global Race: Raging Thunder is rather splendid and makes use of the E90's 3D acceleration hardware. But as many blogs (including iGadget and Symbian Freak) have recently pointed out, the game also works near-perfectly on any S60 3rd Edition phone with a 3D chip, which currently means the N95, N93 and N93i. You can download Global Race completely free from Nokia's E90 software support page.
It's..... the daily E-series blog link, this time highlighting the fact that there's a whole new version of Yahoo! Go on the loose. It's a 700K Java applet that's RAM intensive, alas, but that not withstanding it does give complete access to all your Yahoo! stuff and has weather and maps as well, with full GPS integration (on the likes of the Nokia N95). Worth the RAM hit? Here are the Yahoo! Go write-up and links.
Augmentra, the developers of the off-road GPS enabled navigation and tracking software ViewRanger, have announced they have extended their mapping coverage to Finland. Initial products include mapping at 1:50,000 for the Helsinki metropolitan area, Southern Finland and the Central Saimaa Lake District with more to follow.
Here are a few Moto Z8 news snippets. Stuart Clark let us know about the launch of a new Z8 focused website Moto Smartphones. The Z8 is now becoming more widely available; it is available on O2 in the UK for free on select contracts. SIM free phones are expected to reach retail in August. Finally Yahoo Go is also now available for the Z8.
Just call us quick off the mark.... Quickoffice Premier has just received a big update, to v4.5, with added multi-language spell checking, improved document compatibility, Series 80-style keyboard shortcuts, extra features and plenty of bug fixes. Is it the ultimate office suite for S60 smartphones? I upgraded the Nokia E90 and sat down to find out.
