NTT DoCoMo recently announced 8 new phones for its 902 range. Five of these phones are Symbian powered MOAP phones. Rafe's had his hands on the Nokia 5500, the latest S60 phone from Finland. Targetted as a feature phone (as opposed to a smartphone), the 5500 has the angle of being a great sports companion phone, with lap times, clocks, pedometers and a robust construction. Interesting article here on a new classification for electronic devices (thanks to the Carnival for the link), though I don't think either 'Communications and control devices' or PCD will catch on. (Nor will Nokia's 'Multimedia Computer', come to that) As in my previous editorial, I think 'phone' will remain the popular term, with the term encompassing all current feature phones, smartphones and connected PDAs.

Nokia today announced the Nokia 5500 Sport designed for the active minded user. The phone, which is one of the smallest S60 Nokia phones announced thus far, has three modes which can be changed via a dedicated button and reflecting different usage scenarios - phone, music and sport. Features include text to speech so your messages can be read out while jogging, a pedometer function to measure distance run and calories burnt and a 2 megapixels camera. More after the break...

A S60 blog reports that the Nokia E61 support pages are online, which means it's shipping somewhere in the world. Free software for this S60 3rd edition device includes WorldMate and Handy Expense.

Nokia today announced three new Nseries handsets - the Nokia N72, N73 and N93. The N93 is focused on video recording, it has a Carl Zeiss 3.2 megapixel camera with DVD quality capture at 30 frames per second, a 3x optical zoom, video stabilization and runs S60 3rd Edition. The N73 is a small but state of the art smartphone with an emphasis on camera functionality. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, built in Flickr support and runs S60 3rd Edition. The N72 is an all round smartphone with an emphasis on style and fashion (available in black or glossy pink). It has a 2 megapixel camera, music player, FM radio and runs S60 2nd Edition.
