mBrainSoftware has just released an important upgrade to Pdf+ for UIQ 3. It now has Chinese and Japanese reading capability and two versions are available, Pdf+ Basic and Pdf+ Standard. Oh... and for those with Pdf+ inside the ROM on devices such as the Sony Ericsson P990, P1i and M600, there's also a ROM upgrade for free. Full press release and details below.
UIQ Technology recently held a Developer Fast Track Event in Budapest. Some of the presentations from that event are now available for download from the UIQ website. Presentations range from an introduction to UIQ and its developer program to expert tips and tricks from EMCC.

Here are two free UIQ applications that recently caught our eye. Swim is an application which allows you to automatically sync to a SyncML server on a schedule (e.g. every hour). PodcastPlayer is a podcatcher (podcast downloader) for UIQ 3 phones. Both these applications come from the Bergamot project, the aim of which is to release high quality, open source software for the UIQ platform,
A new version of Linkboy has just been released on the developer's web site. For UIQ 3 users, Linkboy provides customisable shortcuts which are integrated into the standby screen. Mark/Space is planning to bring Missing Sync to the Symbian platform. Missing Sync is a sync solution for Mac OS X users, it allows syncronisation of contacts (Apple Address Book), calendar entries (iCal), photos (iPhoto), videos (Quick Time) and music (iTunes) to and from the phone. The software supports all UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition phones and will be made available in Q1 2008.
Symbian has announced the improved version of Symbian Signed, which was revealed at the Smartphone Show, has now launched. Symbian Signed now comes in three flavours: Open Signed (for developer testing), Express Signed (instant online signing for $20) and Certified Signed (broadly similar to the previous iteration). Express Signed significantly lowers the cost of signing for most application developers and should result in more applications being made available.

The deal between Sony Ericsson to co-own UIQ Technology, together with Motorola, has received blessing from the European Union and it seems the approval is the last hurdle before the split-ownership begins. With Sony Ericsson's strong UIQ developer community and Motorola's innovative designs, UIQ's future catalogue looks interesting. Time will tell... Full news after the jump.
