Ah yes, Krisse does like to roundup Christmas/wintery games each year, with a couple of new entrants this time round. There are games for all Symbian platforms, most of them are free, and at the very least they should keep you going until Nokia decides to throw the switch on their N-Gage store...
A while back, Proporta kindly sent over the 'Freedom Mini GPS' for review, a tiny 30g GPS that could happily sit in the tiniest pocket or on a key ring - and I just hadn't got round to writing about it yet. Time moves on and there's now a 20g "Freedom Keychain GPS SiRF Receiver" that's even smaller. If you want to get your hands on either of these accessories, read on...
Channel 5 (in the UK)'s 'Gadget Show' has done a web-only video review of the Sony Ericsson P1i, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses in the four minutes of detailed footage. Quite critical in the end, but it's good to see some mainstream coverage of a UIQ 3 device.
Kudos to programme Barak Harel for coming up with a viable way for mere mortals to 'sign' low level utilities for S60 and Symbian OS. Having started trying to sign RotateMe a week or two ago and given up in frustration, this sort of Windows utility is extremely welcome. You'll still need a Symbian 'key' and 'cer' file, but other than that it's supposed to be totally automatic. Anyone tried it yet?
Quickoffice, already licensed by Sony Ericsson for their UIQ 3 smartphones, has been re-licensed for the next five years, with the addition of the Quickmanager on-device update system, not present on devices like the P990 and P1i. The full press release follows.
A number of sources are reporting that Motorola is to launch a range of high end multimedia ZiNE phones. This ties in with Motorola stated intent of using UIQ for high end multimedia phones. The rumours indicate that the first of the devices in this range will be the Z10.
In the second part of a Friday game double-bill, Attila Katona reviews Robo, also for (nearly) every Symbian OS platform known to man. It's a level-based puzzler in isometric 3D and Robo is really rather good in its cute, pixellated way.
It's been around for a while for S60 and UIQ (in all varieties), but Krisse brings us a detailed review of scrolling shoot 'em up Blazar in the modern age. That'll be the 'we're all kicking our heels, seeing what else is out there, waiting for N-Gage to be properly available' age, then....
The award winning MMplayer is a multimedia player with support for various media formats such as OGG, AVI, MP4, MPEG, etc. Previously available for Palm OS 5 only, it has now been ported to Symbian UIQ 3 and S60 3rd Edition. Head over to its official web site for more information and download. Some screenshots after the break.
Asri al-Baker finds the new Easy Search utility for UIQ 3 smartphones like the Sony Ericsson P990i and P1i a real life saver and an answer to a heartfelt request from long ago. Now it's not just S60 users who can trawl their content for a piece of text!
Encompassing both phones and (UIQ) smartphones, Sony Ericsson has announced the nominees for its 2007 Content Awards, winners to be announced on Dec 18th. Some familiar names in the press release below. Of interest also is Sony Ericsson's lavish Flash site showcasing each nominee.
One of the best games in the Symbian world just hit UIQ 3 smartphones. Oval Racer doesn't sound very exciting, track wise, but it more than makes up for this in terms of full-on 3D real time action and realistic computer opponents. It's compatible with the Sony Ericsson P990, W950, M600 and P1i.
Forgive the (now) monthly plug, but I've added the Nokia N82, N95 8GB and (non Symbian) HTC Kaiser/TyTN II to my infamous 'choose your perfect smartphone' grid. And hey, the iPhone's in there too, comments welcome on any unusual winners!
