Brian Faber is hard at work on his Neo Geo Pocket Colour emulator for the N-Gage and Series 60 devices. To help him on his way, he's released a 'Teaser' Build to garner stats from users on frame rates, speed, and compatibilty over the entire Series 60 range. It's locked to one Public Domain Rom at the moment, and you can grab the build from the N-Pop Symbian Diary.
This Symbian press release confirms that Panasonic are to release a Series 60 device the X700. Details are vague at the moment but its a flip with camera. I'm sure more details will be released soon (updated picture now included). Press release attached.
This Register article along with some other sites are saying that the non Nokia Symbain owners could use their rights to restrict the purchase of Psions share of the company. If the other sites excise their right to buy part of the shares on offer then Nokia's total holding could be resticted to 46%.
Symbian today announced the next version of their OS 8.0. This covers a number of enhancements including support of SDIO which allows for SD memory expansion and other devices such as digital TV tuning or fingerprint recognition. Anyway the full press release detailing the enhancements is attached.
Symbian have announced that LG have licensed their OS for use in development of smartphones for 2.5G and 3G networks. It does not mention that they will use either UIQ or Series 60 so it is possible they will develop their own user interface. Full press release attached.
Today at Cannes Nokia announced the long awaited Communicator successor Nokia 9500. The tri-band device supporting I-GPRS (EDGE) and Wi-Fi 802.11b is expected to be available in volume during the fourth quarter of 2004. The device is running Series 80 on the inside and Series 40 on the outside.
Nokia and Texas Instrumentsannounce a Series 60 Reference Design to help new manufacturers to get started on Series 60 design, providing a shorter time to market.
Nokia today announced that leading Chineese handset manufacturer Lenovo has licensed Series 60. They have done this under the Complete Design Model for Series 60 also announced today. Breaking into China has to be seen as a major advance for Symbian. Press release in details.
UIQ have today announced a new version 3.0. It does not go into any great details but states that it runs on a new Symbian version 8.0. It seems that it will be aimed at smaller form factor devices with pen or single handed operation. Full press release attached.
