Garmin, maker of standalone and other GPS-focussed devices, has launched Mobile XT, a complete microSD-based navigation solution for smartphones, priced at $99. Details of international availability are sketchy at the moment, but we've asked Garmin UK if they can get hold of a review sample for us to try.

N95 voted 'Dream Handset'

At 'the definitive consumer awards event' last night, the Mobile Choice Awards, the Nokia N95 was voted the ‘Dream Handset’, ahead of the Apple iPhone, while Nokia's other flagship, the E90, was pipped to the post for 'Best Smartphone' by the Blackberry Curve. Nokia Share Online 3.0 via Beta Labs

Nokia has released a new preview version on its Share Online software via Nokia Beta Labs. Online Share allows you to upload photo from your Nseries phone to popular multimedia hosting services and communities such as Flickr. Version 3.0 of Online Share adds the ability to set privacy options (e.g. private, family only, or public on Flickr). A major addition is the ability to view feeds of photos and comments on them from within the Share Online application. Read on for more details and screenshots.

Symbian OS pushes processor technology boundaries

ARM and Symbian today announced Symbian OS would support the ARM Symmetric Multi-processor (SMP) architecture in future OS versions. This technology allows for multiple CPU cores to be used in mobile phones. Don't get too excited though, the first phones using multiple core processors are not expected before 2010. In other Symbian related processor news Renesas today announced it has commenced sample shipments of its new generation chipset, the SH-Mobile G3. Read on for more details.

Can a smartphone replace a laptop?

This is the question I've been trying to answer in Smartphones Show 44, using a Nokia N95 and a Bluetooth keyboard cold turkey for a working week. Did the experiment succeed? Also, Rafe and I were at HTC's big launch two days ago in London. Non-Symbian, but still very interesting, show 44 includes my video report.

Quickoffice review update - now with MfE 2.0 integration

Quickoffice has just publicly released v4.5.25.0 of its S60 office suite, complete with brand new Mail for Exchange 2.0 integration, so you can pluck attachments from your company mail server, edit and return them quickly. They fixed quite a few bugs too, as I found out when compiling my revised review of Quickoffice 4.5, bumping up the suite's review score by one point to that crucial 90%. Read to the bottom of the review though, and you'll see how they can go higher...

N95 8GB tweaks now filtering down: N76 v30

It seems that some of the S60 tweaks assigned to the upcoming Nokia N95 8GB and N81 are making their way down to lesser and older devices - thankfully. The N76, with its greater free RAM, is a logical starting point, with v30.0.015 firmware now available through the Nokia Software Updater, featuring device and Internet search directly on the standby screen.
