Review: Night of the Living Dead streaming video

icon

Time to grab your pop-corn and prepare to hide behind the sofa. Yes, the iconic zombie movie, “Night of the Living Dead”, is now available as an app for Symbian. Please, no jokes about Symbian itself now being a member of the living dead! We've already seen e-books sold as self-contained applications, so can video translate into the same business model? Read on to find out.

Review: Wikiquotes

icon

We've all heard of Wikipedia, but have you heard of Wikiquotes? This is another Wikimedia website, which publishes proverbs and quotes from prominent people, books, films. This can be useful for both research and general interest. Our review today looks at an offline version of Wikimedia for Qt enabled Symbian phones. The entire Wikiquotes database is downloaded as part of the app, which weighs in at a whopping 95MB download. Read on to find out whether it's worth the download.

Review: Vampires vs Werewolves

icon

Putting aside the targetting of this game at the Twilight generation (I remember when Robert Pattinson was Christopher Lee, now there was an actor), Vampires vs Werewolves is a little strategy game with Hammer Horror style plotting, but a hugely rewarding tactical style. Read on for my review of the game on the Nokia N8.

Review: Farm Frenzy 2

We reviewed Alawar's Farm Frenzy last year. Well, the farmyard madness is back with Farm Frenzy 2. Sequels are always difficult to get right though. If you're a mobile gamer looking for a frenzied challenge of screen bashing and resource management, with a dash of cuteness; then you should read on to find out more!

Review: Bang! The Spaghetti Western Card Game

icon

Card games have long been a staple of computer game developers, which has always seemed a strange mix because the physical nature of the cards never translates well to the computer screen. But then neither does the mess or the space needed for a really good card game translate either, and that's a good thing! So here's another card game, converted over to Symbian. And the unusual thing here is that it's not based on the standard 52 playing cards. Bang! is a subtly different beast.

Review: FlexiShield Skin for Nokia N8

icon

There are those who proclaim that the Nokia N8 needs no protection at all. After all, with Gorilla Glass and aluminium unibody shell, what's there to get damaged or to break? However, it's still a relatively expensive bit of kit and even small scuffs will annoy if you drop it onto concrete enough times. And you will, since the aluminium is incredibly smooth and slippery. Which is why there's a small industry creating grippable skins for the N8 - the FlexiShield is the latest of the breed - but it does it pass muster?

Review: SoundHound

icon

If there's a song in your mind, then SoundHound might be what you're looking for. Offering a very similar service to Shazam, SoundHound has the ability to recognise either recorded music or a melody sung or hummed by you. This makes it handy if you have a tune stuck in your head, and shows how well you can hold a tune, or not. Does this make it better than Shazam? Read on to find out.

Review: Lafix

icon

Following on from the huge disappointment of Pipe Mania, Lafix has popped up as my salve. It’s a very basic salve, and for me that just adds to the charm, but it does what it sets out to do (be a great little puzzle game) and is hopefully one of the first titles by Jeti to grace the Symbian platform. Yes there’s room for improvement, but unlike Pipe Mania, Lafix has the core gameplay sorted out, and made that attractive enough to keep you coming despite the flaws.

Review: Mobile Darts

icon

I've long been a fan of sports simulations, bringing outdoor games and activities into the virtual world of your always-with-you smartphone. So, even if you're stuck on a train or just lying in bed, you can still go driving, for example, whether in a car or on the golf range(!) Mobile Darts aims to take that most unathletic of sports and bring it in similar virtual form into Symbian smartphones. Which it does, at the expense of introducing an unexpected level of ability frustration...
