Review: Glastonbury 2011

icon

Back when T.Rex played the first Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, it was easy to keep track of the eight acts that were playing what has turned out to be one of the largest open are music festivals in the world. In 2011, it's a little bit harder (the number of acts, singers, comedians, buskers and hangers on is in the thousands... plus The Wombles). Perhaps UK network Orange's mobile guide to Glastonbury 2011 will replace your paper guide, whether you are heading to the farm or watching it live on the BBC? The short answer is yes, by the way.

Review: T-Fileman vs X-plore

icon

Here's a tricky sell. Creating a file manager utility for an OS that has included a File Manager application for the last six years. Yet this is exactly what Lonely Cat Games and Kenvast Software have done, aiming their applications at a more technical, more fussy audience than the general Symbian populace. The users who, when something goes wrong, are happy to dive under the hood, even into 'system' folders and the device's firmware, rather than give up. These then are apps for geeks - and why not?

Review: Business Calendar

icon

When it comes to calendar applications, we Symbian users have had little choice in recent years. In fact, the last convincing replacement for Calendar was Papyrus for S60 3rd Edition, reviewed by us back in 2006! That is why Business Calendar caught my eye, to my knowledge it's the first serious attempt at a replacement for Calendar on touch screen driven Symbian phones. Is it up to the task? Can it work harmoniously beside Symbian's own Calendar? Read on to find out!

Review: Nokia "Extra Power" DC-11 charger

icon

In one of those "why the heck haven't we reviewed this before?" moments, I look at Nokia's really rather spectacularly useful DC-11 universal charger. Talk about hiding its light under a bushel, the DC-11 has several rather unique benefits - though if you want to avail yourself of one you might have to shop around, since at full RRP it's on the expensive side!

Review: Mopedi and Mopedi Places

icon

Wikipedia is a wonderful thing. It is the culmination of human knowledge presented online for anyone to contribute to. Well, not quite, I don't want to raise the academics' blood pressure too much! While Wikipedia is a comprehensive resource, it's only as accessible as your Internet connection allows, unless you regularly download the entire database. Thanks to Mopedi, you can do just that on your Symbian device. For travellers, there's Mopedi Places too, with curated databases for specific parts of the world. Read on for a look at both.

Review: Medica Medication Reminder

icon

We all have to take medication sometimes. Remembering when to take it, and when to order repeat prescriptions, can be difficult when you're busy or not feeling well. It can be even harder if you're looking after yourself and/or several others too. Wouldn't it be good if your phone could be your personal medical assistant? With “Medica, Medication Reminder” you can do just that. Read on to find out how well it works in practice.

Review: RetroCosmos

icon

The clue is in the name of the game. Retro. Because RetroCosmos is harking back to the old days, the days even before Galaga and Defender ruled the arcade halls around the world. If there was a big timeline of arcade games where we would place Fabien Chereau's title, it would be sandwiched between the original Space Invaders and the more colourful Galaxians.

Review: Spinballs

icon

This looks promising - seven spinning dials with various coloured marbles that need to be lined up so they can disappear, to be replaced by more random coloured marbles. This sounds like an arcade/puzzle game that I could get used to. Unfortunately, it's missing some mojo to lift it out of the sea of nice ideas in order to make it to gaming nirvana.

Review: Boombakas

icon

It's not one hundred percent clear if this game is officially derived from a "Bomber Man" licence or if it's just very clever use of language in the Ovi Store description ("Brave Pipyakas, the offsprings of Bombermen, settled down in cozy world of watermelon trees"), but I'm not that bothered, because what's on offer here is a wonderful mix of exploration, adventure and arcade action.
