Review: Simple IRC

icon

Is there still a place in the world for the old stand-by of Internet Relay Chat? More than anything, this is the question that you have to ask if you are considering a purchase of SimpleIRC. To be honest though, if you're considering it you probably know (a) what IRC is and (b) are using it for something in your online life. In which case, a tick in both those columns means that SimpleIRC is going to be a useful addition to your phone.

Review: Rubik's Cube

icon

Digital Cubes have always been with us on computers, partly because I think those people who can work cubes very well are also the sort of people who like to fiddle around with computers, but the rise of the touch screen smartphones has meant that the portable physical puzzle is easily available as a virtual puzzle in your pocket. But is it worth it?

Review: Yacht (Blue Particle)

icon

"Can't read my, can't read my, no you can't read my, Poker Dice, Yahtzee's got to love somebody." Okay, that's enough of that. The question is not how good my singing is, but can Blue Particle's poker dice game, Yacht, make a better attempt at covering a classic than I can?

Review: McDonalds Finder

icon

There are huge applications, sprawling labyrinths of functions, coupled with perfect form (Steve will no doubt be along with one of those later today) but right now I want to show you a fast application, in the modern "single function app" mode that is so prevalent on smartphones. And it's for fast food. Yes, welcome to Symbian, the McDonalds Finder!

Review: Wynn Las Vegas

icon

If there's anything that the Las Vegas hotels are good at, it's giving you a massive experience - because at some point they know they're going to get you sitting down at a gambling table where they have at least a 0.5% advantage. But as the attraction of Vegas expands to luxury resort, spectacular shows and fantastic food, the sooner they can get you into their... ecosystem the better. Which is why the Wynn Las Vegas application is a little bit interesting.

Review: The Post Office

icon

Well, what do you know? The Post Office, a grand old institution in the UK, still with branches in many villages across the country, just got itself an official 'app' in the Ovi Store, commissioned by the PO from developers Grapple Mobile. The result is implemented in Java and a trifle simplistic, but it's still a quick way into some of The Post Office's most needed information.

Review: (Maya) Bubbles Touch

icon

One of my wife's favourite games ever was Frozen Bubble, the infamous bubble shooter that worked so well on the S60 phones of yesteryear. Which made Maya Bubbles Touch an interesting review subject - how would it measure up to the rightly famous previous classic of the genre? Pretty well, with the caveat that there's a definite twist in the gameplay. Read on...

Review: Trainline Tickets

icon

Coming from the Trainline website - which acts as a central ticket agent for all the UK train companies - this utility application is aimed at the frequent traveller, allowing you to check train times and fares from the handset, and then buy your tickets from your phone without having to worry about call centres, complicated websites, or a very long queue to the one ticket sales counter open in the station.

Review: FidoDido Tower Blitz

icon

Some people say that old games never die, they're just remade. It certainly seems to be the case with FidoDido Tower Blitz. You play the familiar hand drawn character, tasked with painting an arena of coloured blocks, by jumping on them! Sounds simple? Not when you factor in the hazards and enemies. Sounds familiar? Quite possibly, read on to find out why!

Review: Strategy Soccer

icon

Strategy first, soccer second, That's how this quirky game from Onslaught Media is titled, and I think they're on to a Championship winner here, at least for S60 5th Edition phones (no Symbian^3 yet). No, it's not in the Premier League of mobile games, but there is promise here. That's likely to come in a future game, because I'm not sure how far Strategy Soccer can be extended. That's okay though, because I'm enjoying 'Soccer', at the same time recognising it's not going to have massive mainstream appeal.
