Review: Scosche solBAT II Solar Powered Battery Pack

icon

The accessory genre of portable battery pack is well established, of course - the Proporta ones are best known. But a twist on the concept is to have solar input as well, giving extra flexibility when away from computers and power sources. The Scosche solBAT II Solar is a recent example, so I got it in for review, only to find a showstopping problem almost immediately. It's interesting tech though, so do please read on...

Review: Jelly Lens "close up"

icon

And now for something completely different. From the All About Symbian Friday Review Cupboard comes this, the Jelly Lens "Close up", claimed to help fixed focus-lensed camera phones shoot macro photos. It's ultra cheap and ultra low tech, but is it any good and will it help budding nature and still life photographers who own the EDoF-lensed Nokia C6-01, C7 and E7? I take one for the team and settle down to look at the infamous 'Jelly Lens'.

Review: Nokia E7, part 6 (Navigation, Utilities, Homescreens, Wrap-up)

icon

It's big, it's black, it knows where it is and it's surprisingly thin. Here's the sixth, and final, part in our in-depth review of the retail Nokia E7. I look at the built-in mapping and navigation, at additional applications, both preloaded and supplied via the on-device store, at its homescreens, plus I try to work out where the E7 fits into the smartphone world of 2011. Be sure to also check Part 1Part 2Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5 of our E7 review so far.

Review: Mobile Fun Bluetooth Cassette Adapter

icon

Those Mobile Fun folks are pretty good at digging out weird and wonderful accessories for our smartphones. In this case, a Bluetooth Cassette adapter, for those older cars like mine which haven't quite made it to the CD age yet. Pair this with your phone, stick it into your car's cassette slot and you're away with stereo music direct to your car amp and speakers. Perfect for those without an FM transmitter in their phone or for whom there's simply too much FM interference? In theory. Unfortunately..... Here's my review.

Review: Tron Tanks

icon

This weekend I finally managed to see Tron Legacy in 2D (sorry, but the 3D hurts my eyes and I’m Scottish so why would I spend more money to watch something that causes me pain?). Anyway, as the film opens, Sam Flynn is pimping the Nokia N8 as a virus-uploading magic door-opening tool. That’s product placement for you (all Psion managed was the Series 3a as the bomb timer in Executive Decision). To go along with all the advertising, Nokia has rolled out a bundle of Tron goodies on the Ovi Store, and one of them caught my eye: Tron Tanks.

Review: iSpyCams

icon

I'm a sucker for webcams - being able to glimpse live views of far-flung places round the world while I'm seated comfortably in my armchair never fails to impress me - even if, in iSpyCams case, the images are small and phone-sized and despite the somewhat dated Java-driven interface. Available for purchase in the Ovi Store, here's my heavily illustrated review.

Review: NuevaSync

icon

Keeping one's device in sync with calendar and contacts is one of the core functions for anyone who uses their phone as their personal organiser. One option for doing this is the Mail for Exchange protocol which is supported by Nokia Messaging. NuevaSync is a premium service that brings together a range of cloud email and PIM services together and provides push synchronisation to your device. Here's my long term review.

Review: Nokia BH-905 Bluetooth Stereo Headset

icon

In this latest accessory review, we investigate Nokia's new BH905 high end noise-cancelling headset. How does it fare for listening to delicate music in noisy environments. In the style of 'The Gadget Show' (and its budget!), to test the BH905 properly, Ewan booked himself on a Boeing 777 to the USA to see if even jet engines could be 'blocked'. It's a positive review, although it seems that good in-ear-canal headphones still block extraneous noise better at the end of the day.
