Review: Flowd

icon

We have social networks for location, social networks for short messages, and social networks for sharing everything with the mega-corporations such as Facebook. Now it's time for a new social network that promises to put you in touch with "your favourite acts' moves and grooves." Beyond the PR fluff, is it any good? Technically, yes. Socially... the ball is still up in air.

Review: Nokia Hard Cover CC-3009 for E7

icon

I'd originally planned another case review roundup for the Nokia E7, but several of the possible cases have failed to materialise, so I'm going to tackle a few of the best cases individually. Starting with the Nokia CC-3009, a simple, yet superbly made shell that both protects and enhances daily operation.

Review: Global Subway

icon

I'm a bit of trainspotter. Not in the sense of physically collecting the numbers of each train that I see on the platforms of Edinburgh Waverly - once removed from that. So the availability of an application that brings subway maps from the major cities of the world to my handset has a certain base appeal. Unfortunately, this application feels more like a programming exercise to show off the capability of the developer rather than a genuinely useful globe-trotters guide.

Review: Weather HD

icon

[New review June 2011] Weather HD has made a name for itself on iOS as a 'premium' weather utility, where for 'premium' you can read 'gratuitous video clips that may or may not bear some resemblance to what the weather's actually doing (or going to do)'. Here's the updated (v1.01) version for Symbian, with significant work done to improve the speed and responsiveness of the app. But is it enough?

Review: Burn the Rope

icon

Now here's something that feels fresh and exciting. Burn the Rope has a simple premise, you need to burn all the rope. Almost everything you need to know is in the title of the game. The only other thing you need to know is that this game is one of the few that really makes good use of the tilt sensors on your Symbian smartphone.

Review: Business Calendar

icon

When it comes to calendar applications, we Symbian users have had little choice in recent years. In fact, the last convincing replacement for Calendar was Papyrus for S60 3rd Edition, reviewed by us back in 2006! That is why Business Calendar caught my eye, to my knowledge it's the first serious attempt at a replacement for Calendar on touch screen driven Symbian phones. Is it up to the task? Can it work harmoniously beside Symbian's own Calendar? Read on to find out!

Review: Nokia "Extra Power" DC-11 charger

icon

In one of those "why the heck haven't we reviewed this before?" moments, I look at Nokia's really rather spectacularly useful DC-11 universal charger. Talk about hiding its light under a bushel, the DC-11 has several rather unique benefits - though if you want to avail yourself of one you might have to shop around, since at full RRP it's on the expensive side!

Review: Mopedi and Mopedi Places

icon

Wikipedia is a wonderful thing. It is the culmination of human knowledge presented online for anyone to contribute to. Well, not quite, I don't want to raise the academics' blood pressure too much! While Wikipedia is a comprehensive resource, it's only as accessible as your Internet connection allows, unless you regularly download the entire database. Thanks to Mopedi, you can do just that on your Symbian device. For travellers, there's Mopedi Places too, with curated databases for specific parts of the world. Read on for a look at both.

We all have to take medication sometimes. Remembering when to take it, and when to order repeat prescriptions, can be difficult when you're busy or not feeling well. It can be even harder if you're looking after yourself and/or several others too. Wouldn't it be good if your phone could be your personal medical assistant? With “Medica, Medication Reminder” you can do just that. Read on to find out how well it works in practice.
