N-Gage News Round-up

Published by Tzer2 at 22:49 BST, July 19th 2008

It's been a busy week over on All About N-Gage, with videos, polls, sales charts, themes, the big Brothers In Arms review, and other assorted gubbins. For those of you who haven't been following AAN lately, we present a quick round-up.

 - AAN's current on-going poll is attempting to find out where people play N-Gage games the most. To take part in the poll, visit this link.

 - The latest global game sales chart for the N-Gage platform has been published, and you can see it on All About N-Gage.

 - An interview with Scott Foe for the Portfolio.com website has apparently revealed the launch date for Reset Generation.

 - All About N-Gage has done four brand new gameplay videos of the excellent Hooked On: Creatures Of The Deep, with each video covering one of the game's resorts in depth.

 - An official S60 3rd Edition theme based on Pro Series Golf has been made available for download from n-gage.com.

 - For those of you still a bit unsure of how to choose a club or fine-tune a shot, AAN has done a gameplay video of Pro Series Golf in action, and you can find links to tutorials on Pro Series Golf's AAN game page.

 - As N-Gage is part of Nokia's Ovi suite of online services, it looks like N-Gage player names will eventually be replaced by Nokia Account usernames. If you want to make sure you get your favourite username, you should register on Nokia Account ASAP.

 - Brothers In Arms has been released on the N-Gage platform, and Ewan Spence has done a screenshot-laden review of the game (along with a very justified rant about the stupidity of 20 second demos).

 - AAN's survey of favourite retro computers, consoles and handhelds has closed, and the results can be read in this article.

...and that's it for another week, see you next time!

If you want to find out more about the new N-Gage platform take a look at AAN's N-Gage FAQ.

If you have a Nokia N81, N81 8GB, N82, N95 or N95 8GB you can install the N-Gage platform right now directly onto your phone, see this step-by-step tutorial on how to do it.

Sir,
You may find this little bit off topic but do you have any idea when ONE will be available?

I have stopped believing on nokia's release dates as they never turn out to be true. ONE was supposed to be available on 1st of june.

Is there any probability that the developers will make a software rendered version available as well? If i'm not mistaken, N81 does not have 3d accelerator.

On the release dates, as far as I know Nokia has never officially announced any release dates for any of its games.

The 1st June date appeared on the website's One game page, but that was the only place and it was never publicised, so I suspect that was meant as an estimated date.

In short, don't believe any dates unless Nokia has actually put out a press release about them (which they haven't for any games so far).

There is reason to think Nokia wanted to release One in June, but it seems they've had some kind of last minute technical hitches. Delays like this are possibly due to bugs that come up during testing. Phone games are notoriously difficult to test due to having to support many models, many firmware versions, and many network operator variants of those models and firmware.

Most potential N-Gage phones don't have a 3D accelerator, but Nokia did say last year they intended to do two versions of some games for phones with an accelerator and those without.

So far, no games use the accelerator. However, you can still get very good and smooth 3D without an accelerator if the programmers are very clever with the graphics, for example System Rush Evolution and Creatures Of The Deep look excellent.

If Nokia ever do use the 3D accelerator in full N-Gage games, believe me we'll do a news story about it. For the moment though you can assume they don't.
