NAVTEQ's JourneyView product enters private beta

Published by at

NAVTEQ, the division of Nokia that provides mapping and location data services, has announced that its new JourneyView product has entered into a private beta period, ahead of a full launch early next year. The JourneyView product is a combination of 360 degree street-level imagery and links to map and POI content. The private beta is intended to allow developers and other partners to get a demo of the data and help shape the final specification of the product.

JourneyView is the first NAVTEQ product to take advantage of the new 'NAVTEQ True' collection technology, which we wrote about earlier this year:

The system, which is placed on top of a vehicle, combines a LIDAR system, multiple panoramic cameras, and positioning (GPS and IMU) sensors. This data collected will be used to create the next generation of digital maps and shows and will allow for significant advances beyond what is available today.

Navteq's business is to provide this mapping data and associated databases to third parties. They have an extensive developer program called Navteq Network for Developers (NN4D) through which developers can gain access to Navteq's digital mapping and location products. This means you'll see the fruits of the JourneyView product arrive on the market through numerous commercial products from NAVTEQ's licensees.

One example of these licensees is Nokia itself. Ovi Maps makes extensive use of NAVTEQ data. It is very likely that it will take advantage of the JourneyView in a future release. This, for example, might include the provision of detailed street-level imagery when browsing a map or navigating along a route, similar to Google's Street View.

From the press release:

The private beta program provides customers access to the NAVTEQ JourneyView product, including sample source imagery, image overlays, 3D depth maps and POI interface, as well as technical support to assist them in maximizing the product’s full potential.

“This program is a great example of how NAVTEQ works closely with our customers to define solutions that will create value for their consumers and help them differentiate from their competitors”, says Tiffany Treacy, vice president of global product management, NAVTEQ.

NAVTEQ JourneyView is a unique combination of interactive 360 degree street-level imagery linked to the NAVTEQ® map and POI content for urban exploration, navigation, LBS applications and location based advertising. It will be the first new offering to take advantage of capabilities enabled by the recently deployed NAVTEQ True™ collection technology.  The product will enable customers to create new and differentiated experiences, providing consumers with relevant, timely and location aware information.
