Nokia seems to have had a spring clean on its Download! catalog for many devices. Comments welcome, but maybe time to hit 'Refresh'? On my N95, I noticed the Foreca Weather utility (think iPhone Weather), Boingo Wi-Fi (a one-hit sub service to most commercial Wi-Fi networks), Easy Wi-Fi (err... ditto), Sonic Jump (a trial version of a Java arcade game, licensed from SEGA) and a Simpsons game, while the Symbian Blog has spotted the new IAC (Independent Artists Club) downloader. Nokia's Beta Labs has released a standalone version of their free Device Status utility. It's fast and it works well, to give you free RAM and a hundred other bits of geeky information on any S60 3rd Edition smartphone.

'Windows Live and Hotmail' has now appeared in the 'Internet' section of Download! for most Eseries smartphones and communicators (this was previously Nseries only). The blurb says that Windows Live is currently free but that there may be a charge in the future. Or you could just use Google and GMail instead 8-) (via Eseries)
Symbian in Motion is reporting that the Nokia E90's Active Notes application, letting you insert images and other objects into HTML-based text notes, is now available for all S60 3rd Edition devices. [updated] SiM provides a download link but you may also find Active Notes in your Nokia smartphone's Download! directory. See also my Active Notes mini-tutorial.
Although we don't normally comment on vapourware, there are many old Palm OS fans who feel they can't move over to a modern smartphone because they have one or more specific Palm applications they can't live without. UIQ 3 users have had a sudden an assault of PIM applications recently starting with DreamLife. Now the well known Palm OS PIM Application, Agendus, is also available for UIQ 3. It offers integrated contacts and calendar management. Full information after the break.
Also officially launched at the Smartphone Show was Epocware's Handy Calendar. This replaces the built-in S60 Calendar and adds many new functions. The press release is below. Comments on sync compatibility and functionality are welcomed!
The slightly predictable mess that's Microsoft's altering of their Office file formats (to XML) has left smartphone owners in the lurch. But at least there's light at the end of the tunnel with today's Smartphone Show announcements: Dataviz has announced Documents To Go Premium Edition version 4.0 for UIQ 3 smartphones and Quickoffice has announced Quickoffice Premier 5.0 for S60 3rd Edition, both offering full Office 2007 editing. In other news, Quickoffice has announced a partnership with SoonR, dubbed Quickaccess.
UIQ has announced its second ‘Open Application Competition’ for 2008 at today’s Symbian Smartphone Show. Aimed at finding some of the best new applications (and developers) in the UIQ ecosystem, the competition runs from today until the end of 2007 (December 31st), where a jury of experts will judge the submitted applications.
