Psiloc's irRemote has been one of the most eagerly awaited utilities for S60 3rd Edition and Symbian In Motion reports that it's now finished. Assuming your S60 smartphone has an infrared port (quite likely), your smartphone can then be a valid backup in case a genuine TV or a/v remote goes missing.
S60.com do like to license and give away free utilities every now and then. This month, they've just put up Aglaya's Call Filter (normally $9), as the name suggests a piece of software to filter through just the calls you want, according to rules that you set up. It's compatible with all S60 3rd Edition smartphones. Grab it while you can! (you do need to 'sign in' for the link to work)
In this news post we have rounded up some information from today's N82 launch including a summary of the virtual event and numbers on the reduced lag and latency time on the N82's camera. We have also rounded some initial commentary and media from around the web. Read on for more.
It's not every day that a reader points out a utility that I've never even heard of. In this case, thanks to Garvin for pointing out LightNotepad, a freeware plain text editor for S60 3rd Edition. It works on any device, but is especially useful for editing HTML, javascript and other text-based languages on keyboard-equipped devices like the Nokia E90 and E61i. Grab it now! What's that? You can't speak Finnish? You need the English page then 8-)
I know it's desperately sad, but it's also jaw-droppingly cool at the same time. LightSabre 1.1 just got released (thanks, Ricky) for the Nokia N95, with faster response and green screen power. It'll be the talk of the Office Christmas party, I tell you...
PiZero is a genius, I tell you. His latest S60 theme, simply titled 'Gold' is stunning and is now standard equipment on the editorial E90 and N95. Why not give your smartphone the gilt-edge treatment, too? Oh, and if you like his themes, use the PayPal button to donate the price of a beer - I did. Party on, PiZero!
I'm still filing this under 'Nokia was mad not to have released the inclinometer plug-in months ago', but.... Aha, someone's produced an app that finally uses the N95's built-in accelerometer to do something really, really useful, day to day. Yep, it's your very own light sabre. Run the app, press the d-pad button and challenge a new iPhone owner to a duel (via Ricky Cadden).
For one day only Handango is offering a copy of LCG Jukebox by Lonely Cat Games for free (usual cost of $25). LCG Jukebox is a music player with play list management and support for MP3 and OGG audio formats. The software also includes features than enable you to stream various Internet radio stations to your phone.
A new version of mBrainSoftware's Pdf+ is on the way. The highlight of the new version is printing support and the ability to create PDF files (via a printer driver) on the phone itself. The new version will be available in three different editions: basic standard, and professional with differing functionality and price points reflecting different use cases for different sets of users.
After one of the longest beta test programmes I can remember, Opera Mini 4 finally got finished. Head for mini.opera.com on your phone or www.operamini.com on your PC. Highly recommended. Some more details below, but essentially it's a proxy-based web browser that runs under Java but compresses content hugely and thus saves time and money.
Nokia Audiobooks beta, which allows you to listen to compressed audio books on your S60 3rd Edition phone, has been added to Nokia Beta Labs website. Nokia Audiobooks comprises the Audiobook Plater for S60 and the Audiobook Manager for Windows PCs.
In one of the most significant announcements of the year Nokia and Vodafone today stated their intention to launch a range of Nokia handsets with both Nokia's Ovi services and Vodafone's own integrated suite of service. Nokia's Ovi services include Nokia Maps, Nokia Music (including the Music store), Nokia Photos and the N-Gage gaming platform. Additional web based services are also likely to emerge over the next 6 months.
Both Ewan and I caught up with David Quin from ALK at the recent Smartphone Show, to find out about the new CoPilot Live 7, becoming available for both S60 and UIQ. My video podcast was something of a lighting disaster and has been scrapped, but fear not for Ewan has a complete interview with David in AAS audio podcast 44.
