Following on from last week’s tutorial on using Nokia’s DIY Firmware Updated, the Nokia N91 is the latest phone to be added to the list of compatible devices. I took the plunge last night and updated the music phone to v2.00.052. There’s no real difference in the process compared to other devices, although it is highly recommended you back up your phone. Though AAS have not yet been able to get a review model out of Sony Ericsson, others thankfully have. Here are detailed reviews from My-Symbian and The Register, both with a very different slant. Rafe suggests that UIQ 3 is a bit like Marmite (love it or hate it) - read the reviews and make up your own mind!
According to a report on Gamesindustry.biz, Nokia is to be joint sponsor along with PC World of the 2006 BAFTA Games Awards. Nokia will sponsor the Gameplay award which is voted for by members of the public, and is apparently carrying the N-Gage brand. This continued support for the name implies that they're going to continue using it with their Next Gen games service due to launch in the first half of 2007 on new Nokia S60 smartphones.
This is a biggie - I review the Nokia N73, featuring perhaps the best camera ever put into a smartphone but with a few less impressive design and quality issues. Stuart Clark provides a welcome second opinion. And you can leave yours in the comments...
I seem to have missed this being available, but the E-series blog reports on the new ORA USB cradle for the Nokia E61. Yes, I know cradles went out with the Palm III, but personally it's good to see them back.
Nokia has announced the Nokia N80 Internet Edition a software enhanced version of the N80. The N80i bundles extra software including Yahoo Go!, Flickr Integration, WLAN Wizard, Download! (Catalogs), Mobile Search and Mobipocket to give a more complete out of the box experience. The hardware specifications remain the same with quad band GSM and WCDMA radios, a 3.0 megapixel camera, and IrDA, USB, Bluetooth and WLAN connectivity.
Symbian Freak reports that a new bug-fix firmware for the N93 is imminent, to go live on the update server, v11.0.034. Among other things, the free RAM after booting is now up to 24MB - wow, let's hope the same optimisation can be applied to the E70 and other 3rd Edition devices!
The Nokia E62, the yet to be officially anounnced US version of the E61, is starting to generate interest amongst the US media. The E62 is expected to be available on Cingular in the second half of Septmber with subsidised pricing starting at $100 ($300 unsubsidised). Read on for further details.
Rafe demonstrates in illustrated detail how to use Nokia's new Phone Software Update tool to upgrade your S60 smartphone with the very latest firmware version.
The Nokia-sponsored Word Of Mouth (WOM) blog has launched a dedicated N93 blog, with lots of links I'd never seen before, including official news that the new Phone Software Update system will carry N93 firmware (and presumably that for other 3rd Edition devices) as from September 1st, only a week or so away.
While I've been hammering the S60 3rd Edition-powered Nokia N93, Rafe's been having some serious one-on-one time with the UIQ 3-powered Sony Ericsson M600i messaging smartphone. Here's the full and detailed review. Summary? Powerful and innovative, but not all features work well for both one-handed and stylus-driven modes.
Very welcome though perhaps early days, Nokia has released a S60 Phone Software Update utility/service, letting users update their own firmware. For more on this huge story, read on...
In part two of our Nokia N93 review Steve looks at it as a smartphone. While the photo and video capabilities get most of the media attention it is worth remembering that you will not be using these functions most of the time. In concluding the N93 review Steve delivers our verdict on Nokia's multimedia flagship.
Rafe looks at the hand-made leather cases from Noreve for the Nokia E61. Such cases do come at a premium price, but if you are looking for a high quality case it is an investment worth investigating. Noreve also produce cases for the Nokia N93, N91, N80, N70 and N71.
