Published by Rafe Blandford at 11:37 UTC, August 31st 2006

Nokia has announced the Nokia N80 Internet Edition a software enhanced version of the N80. The N80i bundles extra software including Yahoo Go!, Flickr Integration, WLAN Wizard, Download! (Catalogs), Mobile Search and Mobipocket to give a more complete out of the box experience. The hardware specifications remain the same with quad band GSM and WCDMA radios, a 3.0 megapixel camera, and IrDA, USB, Bluetooth and WLAN connectivity.

In the press release Nokia underline the internet capabilities of the phone. The S60 Web browser with its minimap and visual history features gets highlighted

New features include:

  • Yahoo Go application bundled with the phone allowing access to many Yahoo services.
  • Flickr integration in the Camera and Gallery applications as first seen in the N72, N73 and N93.
  • Supports downloading of compatiable third party VoIP applications which use the embeded SIP protocols (also present on the N80).
  • WLAN Wizard to help users get connected to WiFi networks.
  • Nokia's Download! Client (built on the Preminent technology) and currently available on other phones as the Catalog application. It allows you to download new and featured applications for the N80i.
  • The Mobile Search application (available for other phones here) is bundled and found in the top layer of the applications menu.
  • Mobipocket eBook reading application bundled with the phone.

The N80i also keeps all the N80's key specifications and features:

  • Quad band GSM phone (850, 900, 1800, 1900), WCDMA 2100
  • 3.0 megapixel camera
  • UPnP wireless sharing functionality
  • Bluetooth, IrDA, USB and WLAN connectivity
  • Symbian 9.1 and S60 3rd Edition

The N80i will be available from the middle of September in Pearl Black or Patina Bronze.

The N80i adds together many of Nokia's recent software efforts and represents its commitment to the mobilizing the internet:

"Mobilizing the internet is a major strategic focus for Nokia and I'm excited to see how people can participate on the internet using the Nokia N80 Internet Edition," said Ralph Eric Kunz, vice president, Multimedia, Nokia. "The internet has evolved from static web pages to communities and people sharing experiences. I believe it will be multimedia computers, such as the Nokia N80 Internet Edition, that will be primary devices for people to participate in this phenomenon, in addition to PCs."

Can existing N80 owners download all this software? :P

Odd that its a software update.
TazUk
Nothing new on the software front - it's all out there already.

I like the sound of the Bronze finish though..

Taz - I can't find Yahoo Go for my N80. Where do you get it?

It will be interesting to see whether there are any 'hidden' improvements for example to the camera or memory optimisation.

In the past with 'i' versions of Nokia phones it has not been possible to upgrade existing phones to the new version, however if as stated there are no 'hardware' changes then surely it will be possible to flash existing N80's with the N80i software.

Time will tell.....

What is missing is a new, more powerfull battery!

If you read the full press release it also mentions about 'voip'

'Making an Internet call with the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is as easy as making a regular voice call only the call is carried over WLAN. The VoIP framework (based on the SIP protocol) is integrated into the Nokia user interface, and the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is allows for downloading compatible third party internet call applications.

previously although you could enter sip settings only the e series phones had the voip function

The N80 currently only has WCDMA 2100, not 1900+2100. I do not think that the N80i, which seems to only include software upgrades, would add another WCDMA band. A different version of the N80 (N80-3) was planned to include 1900 for the USA but it is as yet unreleased.

My apologies on the band mistake. It has only one. The N80i like the N80 is 1900 or 2100.

I think most of that improvements can be done with 3rd party software. Hope this new N80i could make the regular N80 become cheaper and buy it :-)

Hmmm, interesting I'm curious that is there any hardware changes, and also, will Nokia maintain two different firmwares for 'normal' and internet edition' N80s...

N80i:con?

Taz: Thanks but I'd found that. My point was that the N80 isn't supported yet. I understood from your earlier comment that it was. The link shows it still missing as a supported phone.

There is no such thing as the N80i. The press release refers to the product as 'Nokia N80 Internet Edition'. So i assume its ike the N93 Golf edition. Same phone(N80) but with some extra software already installed.

Yea... Marketing, nothing more.

nj7 above has to be right. The existing N80 is essentially out in typical Nokia 'public beta'. There is no way it can be a new model per se. The N80 is basically unusable for VoIP and SIP as it doesn't have a useful battery for starters. If you want SIP, a decent battery and some degree of debugged OS, then get an E61. I threw my N80 back a day after getting it.
Rafe
Yes the N80i is a marketing excerise. I was a bit suprised to see it referred to as the N80i on the Nokia site (check out the press pictures for example) as previsouly marketing led phone hadn't used this shothand.. e.g. Nokia 6630 Music Edition
fdxd
Nokia never refer to the Nokia N80 Internet Edition as N80i on their press site even. Its not a new phone launch its a software package with the phone ala 6630 music edition and N93 Golf Edition. I assume this replaces the normal N80 package.
voipo
it's not necessary to instal third party voip software to reap the benefits of the N80i 's SIP compatibility. if you're in the UK, it's as easy to use voip on N80i's as it is on E60's. afaik aql.com are the only people who provide OTA configs, which is the simplest way to get started with voip. hopefully more nokias aqcuire those "i" features.
