Earning a well deserved AAS MegaApp award is Nokia's free Lifeblog, re-reviewed in 2007 in the light of the price point(!), potential integration with the likes of Vox and Flickr, and compatibility with powerful devices like the N95. Here's Ewan's review of LifeBlog 2.5.
In part 1 of a four part review, Rafe examines the new Motorola RIZR Z8 in detail, looking at the hardware, the overall form factor and the new non-touchscreen version of UIQ 3. What about that hinged keypad, and what about handling those on-screen 'softkeys'?
In AAS podcast 26, Rafe takes a look at the announcement of the Sony Ericsson W960 Walkman device, with comparisons to the upcoming iPhone, Steve decides that discretion is the better part of valour when it comes to casing a smartphone, while Ewan brings up the latest scam on the streets as people seek to get more money out of mobile phone theft. Never let it be said that we at AAS are afraid to speak our minds. Despite lashings of style, good overall build quality and decent music controls, the Nokia N76 is ultimately found wanting in my illustrated review, with that mirror finish and with screens that are just about impossible to see in bright light - why did they bother including a camera?
AAS's Ewan Spence only bought his Nokia N95 a week ago, but he's packed an awful lot into seven days. Here he reports back on what works well on the N95 and what.... works even better. The highlight seems to have been using it to film and then edit videos and photos from Yahoo Hackday... on the spot.
In this editorial Ewan ponders on the importance of marketing in dictating the sales of high end phones. What can be learnt from the Nokia N95, one of the most desirable phones on the market, and what implications does this have.
Maybe AAS should launch 'The Observers Book of Smartphones'? Anyway, it's always worth a glance in all the phone shops in your local town. In this case (photos below), I spotted Vodafone heavily promoting their new data tariffs and the first appearance of the Motorola Z8 to the masses.
The story so far... Ewan's got himself a Nokia N95 and, while at Global Messaging 2007, heard the N95 denounced for having the grand total of 18 physical keys or buttons. After all, if the iPhone's only going to need one.... It turns out that Ewan thinks the aforementioned buttons are actually quite useful...
Krisse gets a first hand experience of a GPS-equipped smartphone, unboxing the relatively cheap 6110 Navigator in Finland. Here are the first photos, with a review to follow...
