Not to be confused with my own Smartphones Show (see how I slipped that little plug in?), I've spotted hard dates for Symbian's annual (free) Smartphone Show. It's on 17th and 18th of October and is highly recommended. Almost as highly recommended as the annual AllAboutSymbian meet, which will be the evening before (i.e. the 16th) in Central London. Details to follow!
We've been adding to the AllAboutSymbian Support section. It's now got hundreds of well-crafted(!) entries and is well worth a trawl if you hit a problem with your smartphone. All Symbian OS-powered platforms are covered.
So summer seems to have arrived in the UK and it's a slow news day. In the meantime, Rafe's off to the USA for Orange Partner Camp, Ewan's been busy playing with his Nokia E61 and promoting unsigned music bands on national radio, and I've been trying to extend my big comparison table of Series 60 hardware - except that I've still got more question marks than I'd like - can you help fill in any of the blanks?
Here are two session summaries from Orange Code Camp Opio (October 2005). Engineering with a Business Plan (part of a starting up guide) looked at the business side of mobile software development. While Developing for the Sony Ericsson P990 examined the developer options for Sony Ericsson's UIQ super phone. Orange's next biannual developer event, which I'll be attending, starts on Monday and we will be bringing you more developer coverage in the near future.
Nokia's Research Centre has posted up the binary files that will allow you to run an Apache server on your S60 smartphone. As well as the server files, there is a mod to allow Python integration, so you can use the scripting language to power the web page generation.
There's a new release of Opera Mini now available. Version 2 of the most popular mobile browser in the world adds favourite-speed-dial, better navigation and extra search engine selection. The full press release follows.
Following last week's 48 hour poll to take a snapshot of the Symbian-powered smartphones you're currently using and your plans for the future, Steve Litchfield picks through the stats and draws out a few surprises.
Hey, listen up! There's a whole new release (1.69) of OggPlay on the loose for all S60, Series 80 and Series 90 users. So that's basically the whole Symbian world apart from UIQ users (who are still on 1.1). S60 3rd Edition users read on...
Here's this week's Carnival of the Mobilists. Some of the stories have already been featured in AAS news, but there's always a gem or three still to be discovered...
OK, Smartphones Show 8 is at last live, comments welcome if it doesn't play OK for you. No sign of the E61 or E70 reviews as neither device has actually arrived yet, and there's more of a Windows Mobile flavour to Show 8. Still, there's video of the Nokia N93 and a video version of my N70/N90 camcorder tips.
Kudos to Russell at MobHappy for daring to suggest that Java (J2ME) isn't a cure-all for development needs and the best thing since sliced bread. Interesting perspective and one which will resonate with developers and any users who've ever taken a huge RAM hit to run a program with a less than optimal interface.
More detailed Q1 sales analysis for smart mobile devices from Canalys, this time broken down just for EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa). Sales are up 25% year on year, Nokia have 75% market share, with RIM, HP and Q-Tek second equal with just 3%. Palm has 2% of the market.
An unofficial All About Symbian poll. What do you currently use and what are you planning on using in 6 months time? Please help us aim our articles, reviews and support at the platforms that matter to you by answering one question in our poll. Thanks.
