First Quarter figures for Nokia (see here on Nokia.com) show sales on the rise, mainly in Asia and the Pacific Region. The overall market share is down to 32% though, namely as American carriers refuse to stock Nokia in the numbers that the Finns would like to see. What stands out in the CEO comments is that Nokia doesn't really have any flagship success stories to shout about - it's just more of the same.
Splinter Cell - when the Playstations had the 3D fun, the first N-Gage title got an interesting platform adventure. Now, with Splinter cell: Chaos Theory, Gameloft have taken their 3D Engine and brought a lovely looking Sam Fisher adventure to the N-Gage. But graphics alone do not make the complete game. Looking beyond the eye candy, Ewan reviews Chaos Theory to find out if the hype is worth it.
Having seen the demo at 3GSM, it's nice to see Vodafone pick up Visto's Push Email Client. Devices such as the RIM Blackberry have made themselves popular through their always connected push email system. Visto's solution integrates very nicely into Symbian OS. When an N-Gage Game is announced in mid-2004, you'd expect it to be a Christmas title. Well we're still waiting for Glimmerati, the long advertsed "Glamour Racing Game" for the N-Gage. Voice Over IP (or how to get round long distance phone charges using your broadband connection) means one name nowadays, and that is Skype. While Pocket PC handsets have had a Skype client for some time, other platforms have been left waiting. Skype's CEO Niklas Zennstrom yesterday announced that versions for Embedded Linux Devices, Symbian and Windows Mobile are planned for later this year (reports MobileMag). Of course politically for a carrier to put Skype directly on Wi-Fi handset means they'd better be ready to loose a lot of call revenue as users switch to Hot Spots...
A Symbian port of Perl (for Nokia Series 60 phones) has been posted to the perl5-porters mailing list by Jarkko Hietaniemi. The author states that it may also run on other Symbian UI's. The ported versions are 5.8.x and 5.9.x. Further details on the mailing list archive.
