Nokia has announced (in something approaching an advert, but still worth reporting for the sheer number involved) that the 3250 (the S60 3rd Edition smartphone with the 'twist' bottom) has sold over a million units in the last three months or so. Although compiled in the USA and with a natural bias, this M:Metrics survey makes interesting reading. Highlights include smartphone penetration in the UK being 6.6%, S60 smartphones topping smartphone sales in Europe (no surprise there) and that around half of all N70 owners go online for content.
Finanz is a business and finance assistant for UIQ3 phones (Sony Ericsson P990i, M600i, and W950i). It helps speed the calculation of loans, annuities, compunded growth, margins and more. It also functions as a classic calculator and operates in both flip open and flip closed modes.
Mobile Whack's reporting that the Sony Ericsson P990i has finally been approved in the USA by the FCC. Here's the link to the user manual and gory internal photos, etc. Interestingly, Expansys still lists the P990i as coming in 'early July'.
Navicore Personal, a GPS navigation solution, is now available for S60 3rd Edition phones. Navicore allows you to easily find your destination whether you are driving, walking or cycling. Additional features include a points of interest database, traffic information, saftey camera information and location messaging. Also of particular note is that existing customers can download a S60 3rd Edition version free of charge.
Now, I know we've had our very own Ewan's original review of the Nokia N90, but I just came across this second opinion, from the point of view of a keen photographer, Martin Geddes. Hmm.... lives in Edinburgh, has two kids, keen on S60 smartphones - are Ewan and Martin the same person? (!)
Calcium, one of the more popular freeware piece of S60 freeware, is now available for S60 3rd Edition devices. Calcium is a calculator which aims to be faster to use that the Calculator application that ships with the phone. It uses the directional keys to allow quick access to the mathematical operators.
Britcaster has opened up the new Mobipod podcast client for UK users. They're looking for people with S60 v2 handsets to help trial the OTA push podcast delivery system. You may remember I looked at the first version of OfficeSuite for S60 smartphones and was quite impressed, despite a few niggles. Now the 3rd Edition version is also out and has the same idiosyncrasies - here's the updated review and relevant info/buy links.
The first question everyone asked when Nokia announced Python for S60 was "when." The second was "where's the source code then?" Well, now the unasked third question can be answered with a quick visit to the Sourceforge Project Page for PyS60 to pick up the S60 3rd Edition version of Python. Just take note of the release notes when they say This is not a final stable release. There are sharp edges and pointy bits. Wear gloves. Keep away from children. (Thanks to Jim for the heads up).
