As you'll see from the photo below, 12 megapixel camera phones are now starting to be sold on the High Street. On the face of it, more is usually better in a specifications battle, so why should I be so irritated by the latest battlefront? Read on for my thoughts on why the entire phone market is being somewhat misled.
Tzer2 goes all provocative in a piece on our sister site, OviGaming.com, asking what on earth Nokia are up to with their games strategy. On the one hand, with parts of the ecosystem stalling and people leaving, on the other with new initiatives, URLs and game titles. It does seem a mystery, so get involved with the discussion.
More updates from Nokia (although there seem to be more betas than Google to be honest!) as Ovi Suite 2.0 receives an updated beta. It now includes support for installing applications on your smartphone via .jar or .sisx files on your PC, better use of memory and various tweaks and fixes to the syncing of photos and music.
While horribly biased (of course), Nokia's Conversations team has done a good job in producing a snack size 3 minute video summary of the main things launched or emphasised at Nokia World 09 Day 1, and it's embedded below. Good if you're short of time! For much more detail, see our other stories and, mostly, wait for Rafe to get back to base with his own hands-on material.
More betas in from Nokia World, with Communities, billed as a 'Social Messaging' beta. The idea is that this can handle all your friends and updates for all social networks - an über client. This early version is quite limited though and only compatible with Facebook and the N97. I've explored it with screenshots below and there's also an official video to enjoy.
The second day of Nokia World has opened with a number of items of interest to developers. Focused on the Ovi Suite of services, two API's are being initially offered. Due to demand these are for Ovi Maps, and are the Ovi Maps Player for mobile and web; and the Ovi Navigation Player to allow you to include walk and drive navigation into third party applications. These will form core components of the new beta Ovi SDK and the new developer program which will be run via the traditional Forum Nokia.
The Progress Project is a new initiative between Nokia and Lonely Planet, dedicated to promoting projects across the world that demonstrate technology making a difference in people's lives. There are a handful of examples up on the rather swish, heavily-video-enabled Flash site at the moment, well worth checking out and bookmarking.
Quietly launching yesterday during Nokia World is the Forum Nokia powered My Daily App, which will be showcasing a new application in the Ovi Store every day. Yes it is a list decided by Nokia, "let's be honest: We're biased. OK, we admit it. We have a point of view, and we're not afraid to use it." but why not shout about the third party support of their devices? And they're so hip it hurts, because they're on Twitter as well (@mydailyapp). Seriously though, great idea, chaps.
Filmed by Mark Guim and embedded below is a Nokia employee demonstrating the kinetic scrolling in all applications in the upcoming v20 firmware update for the Nokia N97. They also talk about memory improvements - as I understand it, C: disk space will be partly improved by optimisations and partly by building into the ROM items which are currently extras. We're all hoping for more free RAM, too.
The latest beta version of Ovi Maps, demonstrated at Nokia World this morning, is now available from the Nokia Beta Labs. New additions include a new menu with one touch access to popular features and improved searching. Compatible with S60 v5 devices, including the newly announced N97 Mini, be aware that this is an early release, but you can download it direct from Nokia.
If the Nokia World presentation on lifecasting caught your eye, then you should head over the the Nokia Beta Labs where an early version of this N97 widget is now available. It will allow you to share your current location via Facebook, and allow your friends to see where you are, as well as any pictures or status messages that you upload. It might be a small idea, but it looks well implemented and easy to use.
Nokia's next S60 music device, the X6, has been announced at Nokia World in Stuttgart this morning. It's going to be marketed as a music phone and the 32GB of storage is going to allow a huge amount of music to be downloaded, and is only available in a Comes with Music variant. But the 16:9 ratio capacitive touch-screen (at 3.2 inches in size) is going to be great for video playback and media browsing. More details to follow.
Nokia has now officially announced the N97 mini at Nokia World 2009, with smaller screen and overall form factor, full-width keyboard (no d-pad) and a focus on social media ('life casting'). Significantly, they're also talking about a whole new memory map and kinetic scrolling across the whole interface, all of which is also to come to the N97 itself in October. More details, images and videos below.
Red Bend, the company behind the Firmware Over The Air update system in most of the smartphones covered here (with the notable exception of Samsung, which doesn't appear to have FOTA yet), has just announced that its FOTA software is now used by just over half a billion mobile devices worldwide, over 413 different devices. This represents a 60% share of the FOTA-enabled mobile phone market. See Red Bend's site for more information.
