You know the game, it's a perennial, it's always challenging and a great time-waster (in the good sense). Mine Sweeper, in this implementation, offers a choice of three grid sizes, an intuitive interface, sound effects, atmospheric graphics and... a ticking clock - can you beat your best time? Not bad value for a quid, I reckon!
It might have a lot of graphics and story panels behind it, but pull away the armour, and Fragger is another "throw things to kill things" game. It's done extremely well, it's challenging and has longevity built in. And one more important thing to remember as I review it. This is not Angry Birds.
Symbian-owning fans of role playing games should be happy at the moment. Following up on our reviews of Crusade of Destiny and Eternal Legacy HD, we have another epic RPG from Gameloft. Weighing in at 305MB Dungeon Hunter 2 is another game you'll be wanting to install over WiFi. In yet another impressive display of Symbian^3 graphics abilities, Dungeon Hunter 2 also has the mechanics to appeal to hardcore gamers.
Having reviewed Pano Wallpaper Pro yesterday, a commenter pointed out the smaller and simpler Wide Wallpaper, also a pound in the Ovi Store and claiming to do the same job. In fact, do it better, since this apparently supports photo overlapping and thus creates the Android-like parallax effect - or at least as far as Symbian is able to. Did it work in practice? Yes and no. Read on.
Is there still a place in the world for the old stand-by of Internet Relay Chat? More than anything, this is the question that you have to ask if you are considering a purchase of SimpleIRC. To be honest though, if you're considering it you probably know (a) what IRC is and (b) are using it for something in your online life. In which case, a tick in both those columns means that SimpleIRC is going to be a useful addition to your phone.
You may remember that David reviewed Pano Wallpaper a few months back, a free utility to aid breaking images up into wallpaper-sized chunks? Well, now we have a 'Pro' version, with loads more options and with the crucial capability to set your homescreen wallpaper auto-magically. It does work and quite slickly, but I was disappointed that the application stopped short of providing Android-like parallax 3D in the all-important portrait mode. Here's my review.
If you're looking for a long term adventure with lavish graphics, then take a look at our review of Eternal Legacy. This adventure game takes full advantage of Symbian^3's graphics acceleration, providing impressive Japanese style graphics. That's only half of the game though. Read on to find out whether Eternal Legacy's gameplay make the price tag, and the whopping 300MB download, worthwhile.
In this video review we take a look at the recently released Rally World Championship application. With a slick user experience, it presents a guide to the drivers and teams involved, but more importantly allows you to follow the rallies as they happen, with breaking news stories, videos, live maps and timing updates. World Rally Championship also serves as a good example of how a rich media application, with a custom user interface, can be created using Qt and Qt Quick (QML).
This is more like it! Smart graphics, a big logical challenge, requiring arcade reactions, with lots of granularity of levels... Now Boarding was a game that stood out for me the second that Steve pointed it out in the Ovi Store. Given that I pounced on this game, have I made a good snap decision? The short answer is yes, this is a great mobile game.
Digital Cubes have always been with us on computers, partly because I think those people who can work cubes very well are also the sort of people who like to fiddle around with computers, but the rise of the touch screen smartphones has meant that the portable physical puzzle is easily available as a virtual puzzle in your pocket. But is it worth it?
