Review: Rail Tickets

icon

You know the feeling: you're on a bus or in a taxi to the train station and you're cutting it very fine. What if there's a queue at the ticket office? Always welcoming new ways to find train times and buy tickets from a smartphone, here I review Rail Tickets, the official application for First Capital Connect/First Great Western here in the UK, for all S60 5th Edition and Symbian^3 phones - despite its Java implementation it does a competent enough job to keep it installed.

Earlier this year we reported on the release of SPB Shell 3D and asked whether it was the ultimate homescreen replacement? Get your pitch forks and guillotines ready as we step back into 18th century France to play Townsmen 6. This Civilisation type strategy game puts you in charge of French provinces, directing workers to complete your objectives. To achieve your goals, you must make sure that your workers are housed and fed. You’ll also need to be good at resource management, to make sure work is getting done. If this sounds like your sort of game, read on to find out more.

Review: Nokia 701 - part 2: OS, Applications, Multimedia, NFC and Verdict

icon

In part 1 of my review of the Nokia 701, I covered its hardware components and performance, concluding that, camera aside, this sleek black newcomer is a Symbian flagship in sheep's clothing. Mind you, as I unveiled at the time, even the camera system had been upgraded too, since the first gen EDoF camera smartphones. In this, part 2 of the review, I round out the Nokia 701's operating system interface and applications - there really is a lot to like here, with only a few niggles.

Review: Nokia 701 - part 1: Hardware and Performance

icon

The second of the (native) Symbian Belle smartphones to be reviewed here, the Nokia 701 takes a huge amount of cues from the year old C7, which is its direct ancestor. The changes (there are more than you might think, especially if you've scanned other sites' cursory 701 once-overs) are mostly all positive, though some will be a little sad to see AMOLED not in the picture. An (admittedly improved) EDoF camera remains a controversial choice, but camera-aside, the powerful internals in the 701 make it great value for money.

Review: Block Breaker 3 Unlimited HD

icon

What do you get if you take all the existing 'Block Breaker' titles and mash them together - and then add another 50% again? And then optimise everything for higher resolution screens and graphics acceleration chips? You get this, Block Breaker 3 Unlimited HD (I can't believe the developers resisted the temptation to add 'Deluxe Pro: Rise of the Meta Ball' or similar, too.....!) It's absolutely the most comprehensive 'Arkanoid' game I've ever played and is an absolute blast, even if it does add rather too many layers of game complexity for my liking.

Review: Nokia E6 long term review and E72 comparison

icon

The Nokia E6–00 is currently the only candybar QWERTY device in the latest Symbian line up. Picking up where the E72 left off, the E6 adds a touchscreen and high pixel density display. The E72, just like the E71 before it, was a big hit among Eseries fans. Does the E6 match up to its S60 3rd Edition predecessors? In this review, we take a long-term look at the E6, and discuss whether E72/E71 users should consider an upgrade.

Review: Nokia 700, part 3: Application roundup, Verdict

icon

I complete our All About Symbian review of the diminutive Nokia 700 with this, part 3, looking at the bundled applications I haven't mentioned so far, at the device's highlights and I deliver a verdict on who the 700 is perfect for (clue: it's probably not for serial smartphone geeks). Watch this space for reviews of other Symbian Belle-powered smartphones, including the larger-screened 701.
