Track your mobile self with 3D Tracking

3D Tracking is an innovative service which allows you to see where you (or rather a suitably set up mobile) has been. The service allows you to view current and past routes and positions. It uses information from a Bluetooth GPS to send location information (via a small piece of Java software) to their servers and display the results overlaid on Google Maps or Google Earth. The service is available at no charge.
3D Tracking is an impressively executed service and a good example of a Web 2.0 and Mobile mashup (please cringe at the buzz words if you wish). The service may be at an early stage, for example there's no map viewing on mobile, but it is good proof of concept and there is a lot of potential here. This sort of service will be even more effective when the phones with built in GPS due to be announced this year become available.

While similar service are available for locating mobile phones (e.g. LocateMe), 3DTracking has the benefit of storing route information and making it available in an easy to use an attractive manner. There costs associated with the data transfer, but these will be relatively small, and the actual service is free. 3DTracking say they will later be adding Premium service which will enable additional features.

The tracking information is not available openly - it is protected via you account, but the information is presumably available to 3D Tracking. This may raise privacy concerns for you. However only your name and password are collected when you registered (no email is required) and as such there is no way to attach the data to any other information.

To get tracks overlaid on Google Earth you will need to download the program to your PC from Google. The advantage of using Google Earth is that tracks an be saved and stored without going back the 3D Tracking website.

Description from the 3D Tracking Website:

3d tracking is a revolutionary way to use the Internet to either monitor the movements of a live vehicle/person or to display a previous route that's been travelled. The vehicle/person's path is displayed as a line on either Google Earth or Google Maps with details of the speed at each point along the route. This allows you to follow the progress of a live vehicle, watching the points appear on the map as the vehicle moves. Alternatively you can view the previously recorded path that a vehicle or person moved along.

With 3d tracking you can create a login account on our ‘Home’ page simply by entering a username and password. We don't need details such as your name, home address or e-mail. Simply create an account, download the application and begin enjoying the world of 3d tracking.
