Open Source OPL is now GO!

Published by at

As of a press release at Symbian at 1pm today (GMT), OPL has now been released under the LGPL license as an open source project. The project's homepage can be found here at sourceforge.net. In a similar manner, Ewan and myself have worked on a project at http://www.symbiandiaries.com/opl/ so that you may be brought the latest OPL news in a style best suited to the layman or beginner.

To quote Symbian's press release: "By making OPL open source, Symbian ensures OPL will remain the most cost-effective and community friendly programming language." This release will help both in the future progress of OPL on the existing 92x0 platform but also in the future plans of porting the OPL to further Symbian based devices. OPL is one of the easiest and definately the cheapest language to start programming on Symbian devices in, and this can only help draw OPL developers from the Psion Series 5 and earlier devices to release their software on more modern platforms, as well as encourage many new programmers into playing with simple programming.

The SymbianDiaries OPL site that has been set up is a way of bringing the latest updates in the OPL sphere to the end user in the friendliest way possible. We also aim to report progress on peoples OPL projects, extensions, programs, and in time offer hosting oppertunities and a linking area to various OPL programs written for various Symbian devices.

Interesting times are ahead, check out the Opl-dev site at sourceforge or the OPL Symbian Diary for more information, and a view to the future of OPL.
