Symbian strengthens position in 3G market

Tokyo and London, 25 March, 2004 – Symbian Limited today announces that Fujitsu Limited and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation are exploring a joint collaboration to develop new FOMA mobile handsets running Symbian OS for NTT DoCoMo, Inc.

Based on Fujitsu and Mitsubishi’s announcement yesterday, the Companies aim to accelerate their development efforts for increasingly sophisticated FOMA handsets based on Symbian OS and quickly bring to market highly differentiated phones.

This announcement follows the Operator Technology Integrator agreement between Symbian and NTT DoCoMo signed in September 2003, which gave NTT DoCoMo access to Symbian OS source code and the right to deliver extended versions of this code to phone manufacturers that are Symbian OS licensees. For handset vendors such as Mitsubishi and Fujitsu, adopting the market-leading Symbian OS, combined with NTT DoCoMo’s FOMA technology based on W-CDMA, as well as technologies available from third party suppliers within the Symbian OS ecosystem, results in reduced phone development costs and accelerated time to market.

This announcement strengthens Symbian’s position in the 3G market. Six 3G phones based on Symbian OS were launched by its licensees in just over one year, three of which were FOMA phones built by Fujitsu exclusively for NTT DoCoMo.

Mitsubishi and Fujitsu are currently finalising details of the potential timing and scope of this collaboration.
