Published by at

Beanik announced last week that its Audio Engine's API's are available to developers via an add in SDK (and will later be integrated into the Metrowerks SDK). This allows developers to integrate high fidelity sound into applications requiring real-time audio for thing like multimedia messaging, user alerts, game soundtracks and special effects.

Press Release:
BEATNIK AUDIO ENGINE APIs NOW AVAILABLE IN METROWERKS TOOLS FOR SYMBIAN OS™

Developers can use Codewarrior™ tools to incorporate high-fidelity Beatnik-powered audio in applications for Symbian-based mobile phones

San Mateo, CA – February 11, 2003 - Beatnik, Inc., a leading provider of standards-based structured audio software solutions for mobile devices, and Metrowerks, a premier provider of wireless development tools and services, today announced the availability of a Software Development Kit that enables developers to integrate Beatnik polyphonic audio into their applications. The Beatnik Audio Engine (BAE™), built into a number of Symbian-based mobile phones, allows developers to integrate high fidelity sound into applications requiring real-time audio for multimedia messaging, user alerts, game soundtracks and special effects.

Beatnik’s technology provides the audio subsystem for a wide range of mobile devices, including Symbian OS v6.1 phones, and forthcoming Symbian OS v7.0 phones. It supports playback of industry standard mobile phone audio formats, including MIDI, SPMIDI, RMF, WAV and raw PCM audio, allowing developers to integrate a wide possible range of audio content in their applications.

The Beatnik SDK is initially available for download from the Metrowerks Codewarrior website and will be incorporated in version 3.0 of Metrowerks’ Codewarrior for Symbian OS toolset, expected to ship in Q2 2003.

“As the market for advanced mobile phones continues to grow, the opportunity for developers to create interactive applications and services is also increasing,” said D’Arcy Salzmann, Wireless Industry Manager. “The Beatnik Audio Engine is the emerging industry standard for mobile phone audio, making it a clear choice as a technology for Symbian OS developers.”

“With over 1m owners of the Nokia 7650 already using the Beatnik Audio Engine every day, and new Symbian OS phones soon to be widely available, there is now a clear market for advanced applications that incorporate high quality audio,” said Jeremy Copp, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Beatnik. “This collaboration with Metrowerks offers developers a flexible toolset that will help them to integrate rich audio and sound effects into mobile phone applications.”

CodeWarrior Development Tools for Symbian OS, Professional Edition, is the first development toolset designed specifically for the Symbian OS™ v7.0, and is being used by Symbian, its licensees, and their partners to create system software and applications for the next generation of Symbian OS phones. The toolset enables wireless developers to develop, build and debug C++ operating system components and applications, all within the same Integrated Development Environment (IDE), for Symbian OS mobile phones. The CodeWarrior IDE allows developers to easily plug in device specific SDKs, like the UIQ SDK for the Sony Ericsson P800, to support multiple Symbian OS configurations including phone designs from different Symbian OS licensees.
