A 'Magnificent Seven' of Ovi Store Products
Published by Steve Litchfield at 11:16 UTC, June 8th 2009
In browsing the Ovi Store, Ewan has come across some new (to him) applications and lots of indications that the the Store is “more than just apps” and that it will prove to be one of the most useful resources to developers and consumers alike. So what delights has he found? Read on for a 'magnificent seven' of examples from the Ovi Store.
"One of the intriguing possibilities of the Ovi Store is to act as a marketplace for audio and video products. By providing a place for people to discover content and more importantly pay the creator (or the company that licences the content for mobile), Ovi could be a key revenue generator of podcasters and short film makers right up to the team behind Britain's Got Talent and their popular clips from the show."

Wow. Is this the best that Ovi has to offer? Then the I guess Ovi people have some homework to do.

Have you actually tried that theme before posting about it?
It's listed as compatible with the 5800 yet it looks awful when in use. PiZero's "pulsar" theme would have been a much better example of a paid-for theme.
The facebook app is a bit naff at the moment too because it's very slow and very unstable.

Nowt there for me in that 7. I've picked up some useful stuff on Ovi Store but nothing on that list.

Yep if this is all Ovi Store has to offer, it's in a lot of trouble.
Main trouble Ovi has at the moment is that most of it is overpriced, just compare the prices with the stuff on Apple's App store, a lot of symbian developers really need to review their pricing structure.

Cor! Last time I suggested such a thing I was nearly lynched! ;)

Ewan is pointing out the types of content you can expect. We'll almost certainly follow up with some application specific stuff too. i.e. our favourite apps in the Ovi Store.
Incidentally Mippin really is very good. But the irony is that its almost entirely web based (I accept it is not a cool or sexy application, but it is one I use regularly) - it's not just a 7 day wonder.

How well is the facebook widget tied into the nokia contacts?
Can you update your contacts email address, photo, etc from facebook?

following the reuters link shows up as no longer available in the ovi store.

I'm surprised you didn't mention AP News. I've used on both the 5800xm and E71 and absolutely love the app, especially the video feature.
Give it a try and see if you like it.

It's hilarious how some folks have a quasi-obsession in bashing Nokia and almost attacking people who say that its not ALL bad and that it has SOME potential.. :D

Any company that is number 1 in its market will get bashed, it is actually a kind of compliment. It's undeniably the best and some people can't handle that.

And Ovi is the best app store? On which planet?
Take a look at the Pre and iPhone 3.0 to see how far Nokia has fallen behind.

Hold on, I must have been mistaken but it seemed like you credited your star wars quote as a "bad movie"!
Oh well sorry AAS but I guess I have to move to Symbian-Freak now. That is of course until they commit star wars blasphemy as well...

I give up.
New Iphone seems to fix all the problems the old one had,
and if the current Iphone is about 2x faster than 5800XM,
usability of new Iphone is going to be a fantastic experience.
And of course a great suite of applications already available instead of this "magnificent seven" crap.
I will keep my 5800XM as a backup, but Nokia has lost the battle.

Well, at least for me, not quite. But it's getting there fast, and it might be just one more iteration. Things that are still missing:
- User-replaceable battery
- Camera flash
- User-accessible filesystem
- Multitasking, or at least a way to upload pictures and video in the background
- Flash-capable web browser

I'll add to that list:
- Price of iPhone is ridiculous
- iPhone is physically too large
- IPhone is not available across networks.
- IPhone more vulnerable to impact and accidents
Apple did quite well this time round to improve the battery life, but still make a flashy box whilst ignoring the fundamentals. Apple was still outsold in the UK this year by the plain old Blackberry, which is a device that just does what it is supposed to do without fuss.

I have to say I love Nokia and am generally very happy with my 5800.
But the facebook app is utter rubbish, no notifications, unbelievably buggy ( I haven't once used it without having it freeze eventually) and mind-bendingly slow, despite me being very patient with it.
I agree that the AP app is brilliant, infinitely better than the Reuters one, the France 24 app is also superb, especially if you change the video quality setting to high or highest. Most of the stuff on the Ovi store is pretty poor at the moment, I sincerely hope it improves.
Hih
The Magnificent Seven? LOL. What a crap (most of them).
Quality of AAS stories are falling down at the same speed as Nokia N-Series sales are. :o

Haha..I do agree that Nokia's been on a stagnant these last 2 years, but fallen behind??? The Pre's got a crap camera with no video, and the iphone still can't multi-task and the camera's probably still crap. Please think carefully before coming out with that sort of crap statement. The fact is both the iphone and the Pre are years behind Nokia. But Nokia's not moving forward and eventually they will catch up. I hope Nokia wakes up!!! In a way, I'm glad that Samsung and SE have some really powerful hardware coming up. That'll hopefully push Nokia in the right direction. I'm waiting to see what they'll come up with later this year.

I'd love to but so far as I am aware they have yet to be released, certainly in England.
On that basis you should certainly look at the Nokia N98. That is the most amazing media phone that leaves all others a decade behind!

I would like to look at the Nokia N97 first, but as far as I am aware it has yet to be released, certainly in England.

I've just said this elsewhere on this site but need to say it here again...
I've loved ALL my Nokia S60 phones, but I've truelly hated all Nokias PC apps and online sites/apps. They just haven't a clue. They just all seem to miss the point completely, whereas the phones are all spot-on. Sad, considering how the world trend seems to be going web based
