[Revised] Google Maps for Symbian updated to 3.0.1.4
Published by Rafe Blandford, Steve Litchfield at 9:09 UTC, April 13th 2009
Google Maps for Symbian on S60 (3rd and 5th Edition) has received a major update to version 3.0.1.4 (from 3.0.0.x). There are UI changes, notably to the context 'pop-up' menu (when you press in the D-pad), this has been restyled to match the application's other dialog elements. There are also many under-the-hood changes to how Google Maps works on S60 phones, see below for the full published changelog [added April 13th].
The context menu allows you to set up directions, switch to street view (and tells you if it is not available), save the location as a favourite (landmark) and search nearby.

The styling of the context menu now matches that of other dialogs.
Here's the full, Google-published changelog:
- Auto-restart location updates: If you turn off your phone or it ran out of battery with Google Latitude automatic location updates enabled either in the background or with Maps open, Latitude will respect this choice and automatically restart location updates in the background when you next turn on your phone.
- Backlight timeout: The backlight will remain on when the driving directions list is open, routes are being viewed on the map, or the device is moving quickly with an active GPS connection.
- Force location updates: If you manually refresh your Latitude friends list, you’ll also force the update of your own location if automatic detection is enabled.
- When changing your photo icon picture in Latitude, you now have the option to take a new picture using your phone’s built-in camera.
- Many minor interface and layout issues have been fixed or changed.
- Cell ID (cell tower) location detection near two cell towers has been improved so that your location bounces less if you’re between two towers.
- Map centering when GPS is active has been fixed on some phones. Previously Maps may have defaulted to your location instead of a friend’s after you choose ‘Show on map’ for the friend in Latitude.
- Latitude friend photo icons have been fixed to properly indicate if a friend’s location is recent (blue outline) or old (gray outline). Previously, some friend photo icons remained blue even if the location was old.
- N82 and N95 devices: Installation file changes to reduce potential hangs during installation that have been reported for a small subset of these devices.
- N73 and N75: Maps for mobile will properly call a number when phone numbers are selected in search results. Previously, hangs may have occurred on these devices.
- E61, E61i, and E62 devices: Shortcut keys work properly using the standard numeric shortcuts. Previously, shortcut keys were not working as intended on these devices.
Known issues:
- Errors may occur if you are verifying a phone number in Latitude that has already been registered with another Google Account.
- N82 and N95 devices: we strongly encourage that you back up your device and consider upgrading to the latest device firmware version (see http://nokia.com/softwareupdate). A very small number of users report experiencing a device hang during installation, and we haven’t yet been able to reproduce this in the lab or determine the exact cause.
- For some S60 3rd ed. FP2 phones (Nokia 5320 XpressMusic, 6210 Navigator, 6220 Classic, 6650, N78, N79, N85, N96, N96-3), you may need to set a default destination using the following steps:
- Go to Settings > Connection > Destinations > Options > Default connection.
- Select "Internet" (if you have it) or whichever APN group you want it to use.
- See other Google Latitude Known Issues.

Credit has to go to Twitter for this one. I think a couple of people have mentioned it.
Minor update and not completely sure I like it to be honest.

New splash screen? And yeah, graphics look ugly. Not that google maps looked anything but ugly on S60 anyway

Just upgraded to GMaps 3.0.1.4 on my N85. When it tries to load get the Network Unavailable error. It gives you the option to Change Connection but when you click it it just brings back the Network Unavailable error screen again.
This happened in the GMaps 3.0.1.2 version too except the error screen was different. Anyone else have this problem. I LOVE GMaps and can't live without it.

Best improvement for me is no asking for connection when starting up on N96 (guessing also on other FP2-phones (on FP2-phones a "set"-connection appears to be a problem)).
Best POI-navigation e.g. for assisting better navigation (e.g. Route 66), because you can save "favorites", which you can use in Route 66.

saulhc - its working fine on my N85
Bick17 - yes the connection dialog improvements are nice. Depends how you have it set up whether you see it or not.

On my N78 i cannot enter the program. I have only 2 options for connecting to internet "Internet and Multimedia msg." but none of these two are my connections to real internet. I cannot use wi-fi or my native mobile internet connection trough wap. So what's to do in this case ?

Common problem on 5800s with many apps. Have you got latest firmware V20?
The solution involves using the *#7370# reset. With the memory card out, wipes out your phone settings so back everything up first.

Rafe - On FP2 you can not set a connection but only a connection-group (Internet or Wap).
This version and the new English Widsets-version (the tranlated ones still have problems (I am dutch for instance)) fixes this. All old apps had problems with this; application kept asking for choices.
People who had found a way around this (probably by setting one connection in a group) now probably do not have a connection. I am guessing the guy on the N85.
You can work around this by altering the connections in the group or -for people who have installed devicescape (like me) and can not modify the group- by renewing your connections and naming them differently and choosing those as "set connection".
You can still change connection while using the application.
