Nokia to close MOSH

Published by Steve Litchfield at 20:09 GMT, March 18th 2009

In a move that's utterly unsurprising, Nokia has announced its intention to close its file sharing site, MOSH. The intentions of this site were never crystal clear at the best of times and it has often been host to warez and adult material, all available without controls in place. MOSH is expected to close before the Ovi store opens in May.

As you said yourself, unsurprised.
When looking at what different stuff was uploaded on the site it was essentially a free market for people to grab hold of "modified" versions of different softwares.

Besides I think it would have ruined the growth of the upcoming OVI Store as well. From what I've read there are the possibility to upload free content such as softwares and themes on the new store.

Having it collected in a central place is also something that is important, especially as Nokia want to get their OVI brand known.

This is part of the move to the Ovi store. In the same way we'll see Widsets disappear as a separate entity.

In one sense its a shame as the ugc part of it won't be replicated, but ultimately that probably wasn't terribly commercial sound and generated a lot fire from commercial partners.

What Mosh gives to the Ovi store is its social aspect - recommendations - the social location concepts haven't been directly trialled, but the social bit certainly has.

You must be kidding.. I mean, it's not a surprise, even because keeping both Mosh and Ovi Store online would kill the Ovi Store very fast, but.. just close it? lol

Mosh is simply a test/beta to prepare for Ovi. Not surprise by this news at all.

Mosh was a host for pirated software so software companies won't miss it too much.

I presume that the software market will be merged soon as well, considering the crap it is.

Lets see if this OVI thing stands for hope

Picking nits, Steve, but nevertheless: You say "Nokia has announced", but it is actually a Reuters reporter that is stating it without any officialy word or announcements by Nokia.

The only Nokia quotation in the Reuters piece is from when MOSH opened (a couple of years ago). All the other quotations in the article are not from anyone from Nokia.

It'll still happen, I'm pretty sure, but unless you can actually point to a Nokia announcement/statement, then Nokia has not announced it and claiming it has does not seem like entirely truthful reporting (it more of in the category of "rumour" or "hearsay").

When there's a press release here:

http://www.nokia.com/press/press-releases

then you can say "Nokia has announced", for sure.

Or when there's a statement on the MOSH web site that it is going to be closed, then you could also take it as "Nokia has announced".
