A final lease of life for the 9300 and 9500?

Published by Steve Litchfield at 8:12 UTC, November 7th 2006

Thanks to Arjen for the news that in the last month there's been a major firmware update available (6.27) for the Nokia 9300(i) and 9500 communicators. No online update in this case though, you'll need to visit an official Nokia service centre. Read on for a summary of what's new.

v6.27 includes:

Messaging: the smallest zoom level now shows 4 lines
Messaging: faster opening of SMS and email messages
You can now activate the device lock without providing the password
There's a new browser engine
Web navigation to next link by using tab key added
2GB memory card support added
Improvements in Java application memory handling
Video/music playing improvements

Plus several dozen other detailed fixes and tweaks. Highly recommended, although many 9300 and 9500 units will now be out of warranty and you'll probably have to pay the service centre for the upgrade.

I was told in a Nokia Service Centre that firmware 6.27 for 9500 has been called back by Nokia - so the 5.22 version remains in place. They commented that the reasons are not going to be communicated (I'm sure that was again a good example how "reliable" Nokia and how "professional" its engineers are...)

I have just picked my 9300i up from the local Nokia Service Centre and they say v5.50 is still the current firmware for this device!

Anyone know why - or indeed different?

Just recieved back my Nokia 9500, 9300 and 9300i with the new firmware (6.27(00)) from a US company which provides this service.

It appears that all is fine - email display faster and WWW access much improved.

All three phones are working well with Blackberry Connect (Version - S80_BlackBerry(6.31.1_1)) and RoadSync (Version 2.003) with our Enterprise Exchange system.

No stability or program conflicts on either phone. Better than new!

Thanks - FLG>>>

Hi there

It appears you can download 6.27 for a fee. I am not brave enough to try, anyone keen?

Cheers

Real Player never worked well but 5.22 killed it dead. Can anyone who has updated to the new firmware tell me if they repaired Real Player as part of the update? I would like to use Orbit with my Communicator but Real Player is the only Commi program that supports the streaming format it uses. It wasn't worth downgrading from 5.22 to be able to do it but it would be worth upgrading if it does.

Also, what are some of the web improvements if there is a new engine in the updated firmware? What kinds of things that didn't work before will work now?

For what it is worth I used IUnlock for my 5.22 upgrade and I was very pleased with their work and the speed of their service. I delayed upgrading forever because I didn't want to be without my 9500. If my experience is any guide you can trust those guys with your phone and they will get it back to you quickly.
